The equipment cases connected the house to the museum.
The phone connected Rocco to fraudulent approvals.
The missing link was what traveled inside the cases.
The answer came from insurance records.
Every historical object transported off-site required temporary coverage.
The fraudulent transfers included certificates showing objects moved to private educational events.
But the insurer had never issued those certificates.
Someone had fabricated them.
Julia compared the forged documents against real ones.
“They’re almost perfect.”
“Almost?”
“The contact number is outdated.”
The museum changed brokers eight months earlier.
Only someone working from old templates would make that mistake.
Adrian had access to archived files.
So did Celeste.
She had helped plan donor events.
Then investigators found something else on Rocco’s phone.
Photographs.
Deleted, but recoverable.
They showed blank transfer forms, insurance templates, and pages containing Rocco’s signature.
The photos were taken after midnight.
Rocco stared at the timestamps.
Mia’s warning had been literal.
Adrian used his phone.
Celeste took her glasses.
Documents appeared.
But why forge transfers for objects that never left?
A second set of records provided the answer.
The same instruments supposedly moved by the museum appeared on inventory lists belonging to a warehouse company in New Jersey.
Not physically.
On paper.
The warehouse claimed it was storing historical scientific equipment owned by Moretti Foundation subsidiaries.
Rocco had never heard of the company.
Its lease guarantor was Adrian.
Rachel looked through the paperwork.
“They’re creating duplicate ownership trails.”
Julia frowned.
“For what?”
The accountants examined the warehouse company's financing.
It had borrowed millions using its inventory as collateral.
Collateral that included museum objects it did not actually possess.
Rocco finally saw part of the scheme.
Adrian was borrowing money against property he did not own.
The false transfer documents made it appear that Rocco approved moving those objects into affiliated storage.
Celeste’s debt suddenly made more sense.
Adrian had offered to absorb it into the same private financing network.
She had not simply protected him.
She had tied herself financially to him.
But Rachel remained uneasy.
“If this was only loan fraud, why use Rocco’s phone?”
“To protect Adrian.”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“But there were easier ways.”
Rocco understood.
The records did more than protect Adrian.
They implicated him personally.
If the scheme collapsed, investigators would see approvals originating from Rocco’s device.
His signature.
His foundation.
His museum.
