Chapter 6 - The Fortress of Silk and Steel

The intoxicating reality of Roman’s proposal lingered in the air long after the afternoon sun faded into the Brooklyn night. Evelyn had spent her entire life carefully stitching garments, keeping her head down, and avoiding the dangerous shadows that governed the city. Now, she was wearing a diamond that could blind a king, firmly anchored to the most dangerous man in the five boroughs. But Roman was not a man who left anything to chance, especially the safety of the woman he was about to make his wife.
Three weeks after he slipped the ring onto her finger, a sleek black armored SUV idled outside the tailor shop. Roman didn't bring her to a lavish penthouse in the city. He drove her an hour outside of the concrete jungle, deep into a heavily wooded, secluded property.
When the wrought-iron gates swung open, Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat.
It was a sprawling, custom-built two-story estate. Its most striking feature was an elegant, sweeping Japanese-style roof. The geometric lines were flawlessly integrated into the architecture, providing a profound sense of psychological grounding and absolute serenity against the brutal, violent world Roman operated within.
"The city is for business," Roman murmured, stepping out of the SUV and wrapping his heavy, warm coat around her shoulders against the autumn chill. "This is for us. A sanctuary. Completely off the grid, titled under a blind trust."
He guided her inside, his hand a firm, protective weight on the small of her back. The interior was a masterpiece of modern security masquerading as high-end luxury. He led her past the grand foyer and directly into the heart of the home.
"I remember what you said about the developer who tried to renovate your shop," Roman said, a dark, knowing smile touching his lips. "How he tried to cut corners. I didn't cut a single one here."
Evelyn stepped into a flawless, twelve-square-meter kitchen. It was an industrial, breathtaking marvel. There was no cheap Thai MDF, and absolutely no Picomat plastic boards. The entire space was lined with custom-built 304 stainless steel cabinets and thick, tempered glass doors. It was pristine, gleaming under the recessed lighting, and utterly indestructible.
"It’s beautiful," Evelyn whispered, running her fingers over the cool, solid steel.
"It’s bulletproof," Roman corrected softly, stepping up behind her and kissing the sensitive skin beneath her ear. "The steel is backed by ballistic plating. The entire first floor can be locked down into a vault in three seconds. I am never going to let the monsters touch you, Evelyn. We are untouchable here."

But as Roman pulled her in for a deep, lingering kiss, his encrypted smartphone vibrated violently against the granite island. The violent hum of the underworld had found them. Roman answered it, his jaw clenching instantly.
"Boss," Sal’s voice crackled over the line, tight with an unprecedented panic. "You need to turn on the news. The Moretti family might be dead, but their ghost just logged on."
