Chapter 9 - Blood on the Granite

While Evelyn was silently executing their empire in the digital realm, the Obsidian executives realized their firewalls were collapsing. Cornered apex predators do not retreat; they force a physical confrontation.

It was 3:00 AM. A violent coastal storm began to batter the two-story estate, the rain lashing against the Japanese-style roof. Evelyn was still at the granite island, downloading the last of the cartel’s corrupt payrolls, when the perimeter alarms shrieked. It was a high-pitched wail that sliced right through the thunder.

Roman instantly killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

"Get behind the island," Roman ordered, retrieving two heavy firearms from a biometric safe beneath the floorboards. He tossed one to Sal, who racked the slide with a metallic crack.

Through the internal security monitors running on emergency power, they watched six heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear storm across the pristine lawn. They were an elite extraction team hired by the Coalition to seize the server keys and execute the woman who had just bankrupt them.

"They breached the front door," Sal whispered.

Evelyn crouched behind the 304 stainless-steel cabinets. She didn't tremble. She was surrounded by the man who had promised to protect her, inside a fortress they had built together. The heavy steel provided flawless ballistic cover.

The mercenaries moved slowly through the dark foyer, their laser sights cutting through the shadows. They expected to find a panicked, helpless tailor. They didn't realize they had just walked into a fatal funnel designed by the most ruthless Underboss in New York.

As the first two mercenaries stepped into the archway of the kitchen, Roman didn't hesitate. He used the reflection of a lightning strike against the steel refrigerator to perfectly track their movements.

The ensuing firefight was a masterclass in tactical brutality. Roman and Sal moved like shadows in the dark. The mercenaries panicked, firing wildly, their bullets ricocheting harmlessly off the indestructible steel panels shielding Evelyn. Within sixty seconds, the physical threat was permanently dismantled on the very floor Roman had built to protect her. The intruders were incapacitated, zip-tied, and utterly defeated.
