Chapter 19 - The Chicago SovereignThe silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. As the federal agents dragged the ruined, disgraced tech titan out into the crisp Chicago night, the power brokers of the world stared at me in profound, awe-struck terror.

I didn't gloat. I calmly picked up a fresh glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray.

"My apologies for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen," I said, offering the stunned room a radiant, devastatingly beautiful smile. "Please. Enjoy the gala."

I took Julian’s arm, and we walked out onto the private, heated terrace overlooking the glittering city.

The fallout from the gala was a seismic event in global finance. The Chimera Group collapsed entirely under the weight of international sanctions and federal raids, their executives fleeing in disgrace. Alexander Pierce was denied bail; he was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary, completely bankrupted, disgraced, and permanently erased from my world.

Our firm, completely insulated from the blast radius, absorbed the massive vacuum left by Pierce’s legitimate American and European assets. We were no longer just a commercial development firm. We were a global, untouchable monolith of architecture, technology, and absolute power.

Six months later.

The air in Chicago was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of blooming spring flowers and the fresh breeze off Lake Michigan. The Spire stood as an unshatterable monument of steel, glass, and absolute perfection, entirely unconquered.

I stood on the massive, open-air observation deck on the seventieth floor, wearing a flowing white linen dress, the wind playing with my hair. Below me, the entire city of Chicago stretched out like a glittering carpet.

The world was perfectly, undeniably quiet.

I heard the soft, familiar footsteps behind me.

Julian walked out through the heavy glass doors. The ruthless architect who had helped me burn down a billionaire's empire was completely gone. In his place was just a man—my husband, my equal, the absolute love of my life. He was carrying Aurora, who was giggling wildly, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck.

He set her down gently, letting her run over to the reinforced glass barrier to look out at the clouds. He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my shoulders, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

"The final projections for the new tech acquisitions in London just cleared," Julian murmured, his deep voice a comforting rumble against my skin. "We officially control the board, Victoria. There is no one left to fight."

"There will always be someone who thinks they can take what we have built," I said softly, leaning back into his solid embrace.

"Let them try," Julian smiled, a rogue, brilliant expression touching his lips. "They will find an impenetrable fortress, and a queen who never misses."
