Chapter 4 - The Downfall of the In-LawsThe fallout was spectacular, swift, and entirely public.

Because Gloria had so proudly flaunted the wedding on her public social media accounts, the evidence of the bigamy was viral within our social circle before the police even processed Sebastian’s fingerprints. Gloria’s prestigious country club friends, who had previously nodded along to her complaints about my "cold, corporate" nature, suddenly treated her like a pariah. She had bragged about her son upgrading his life, only for everyone to discover her son was a fraudulent criminal who lived off my paycheck.

Gloria attempted to call me exactly once to beg for bail money.

"Victoria, you can't leave him in the county jail!" she wept over the phone. "He’s family! He made a mistake! Please, you have the money."

"I am saving my money for a rainy day, Gloria," I replied. "And I strongly suggest you save yours to buy him some commissary snacks. Goodbye."

Without my financial backing, Sebastian was assigned an exhausted public defender. He couldn't afford bail. He sat in a jail cell while Naomi pushed my divorce papers through the system with terrifying speed. Because of his criminal actions, his bigamy, and his attempt to defraud my company out of $18,000 for a honeymoon, the judge granted an expedited, fault-based divorce.

Sebastian was stripped of any claim to alimony. The judge ruled that the Range Rover, the Lincoln Park home, and every cent in my investment accounts belonged entirely to me. He was ordered to pay restitution for the legal fees he had forced me to incur.

As for Alyssa, her fairy tale completely shattered. Facing potential accessory charges for the corporate fraud, she turned state's witness against Sebastian, claiming he had manipulated her. The "true love" they had paraded on the beach evaporated the moment the luxury vacations disappeared. She moved back in with her parents, broke, unemployed, and entirely cut off from the high-society life she had tried to steal.
