Chapter 5 - A New EmpireSix months later, the Chicago winter had melted into a bright, vibrant spring.

I stood in the corner office of my glass tower, looking out over the glittering skyline. The business deal I had signed on the night of Sebastian’s fake wedding had closed flawlessly, increasing our firm's valuation by forty percent. I had just been promoted to senior managing partner.

The Lincoln Park house had been entirely redecorated. Every trace of Sebastian had been scrubbed from the walls, replaced by modern, elegant art and furniture that reflected my taste, not his. I slept soundly, worked passionately, and lived entirely on my own terms.

Sebastian had ultimately pled guilty to avoid a drawn-out federal trial. He was currently serving a three-year sentence in a minimum-security facility. His mother had moved to a smaller condo in the suburbs, hiding from the social elite who now mocked her family's name.

There was a soft knock on my office door.

"Come in," I called out, turning away from the window.

Julian, the lead architect on our new commercial development project, stepped into the room. He was brilliant, fiercely ambitious, and possessed a quiet, grounded confidence that didn't require him to tear me down to feel like a man. We had been collaborating for months, and the professional respect had recently, seamlessly blossomed into something much warmer.

"The board approved the final blueprints," Julian smiled, walking over and handing me a celebratory cup of artisanal coffee. "You engineered a flawless contract, Victoria. They were blown away."

"We engineered it," I corrected him, taking the coffee and inhaling the rich scent.

Julian stepped a fraction closer, his dark eyes meeting mine with genuine, unthreatened admiration. "I was wondering... if you’re free tonight, I’d love to take you to dinner. To celebrate. Just the two of us."

I looked at him, feeling the solid, unbreakable foundation of my life beneath my feet. I had been betrayed, underestimated, and targeted by a man who thought I would quietly disappear into the shadows. Instead, I had burned his shadow to the ground and emerged completely victorious.

"I would love that, Julian," I smiled, stepping forward to clink my paper cup against his.

I had lost a lying husband and a treacherous assistant, but I had gained the entire world. And this time, no one would ever have the power to take it away from me.
