Chapter 2 - The Three-Day Reckoning

For three days, Graham Ashford lived in an arrogant, delusional paradise.

According to the gossip that filtered through my private legal team, Graham had celebrated his divorce by taking Vanessa on a massive shopping spree down the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. They had popped vintage champagne in his penthouse, completely convinced that he had successfully disposed of the "inconvenient" wife his grandfather had forced upon him. He thought the Ashford empire was finally, exclusively his to rule.

On the morning of the third day, Graham sauntered into the Ashford global headquarters, expecting to take his seat at the head of the boardroom table. Instead, he found the executive suite swarming with internal auditors, security personnel, and the entire board of directors.

Thomas Vance, the estate executor, sat at the head of the table, a thick, leather-bound portfolio resting in front of him.

"What the hell is going on here?" Graham demanded, his smug smile faltering as two security guards stepped between him and his leather chair.

"You are being formally evicted from this building, Graham," Thomas said, his voice echoing with absolute, uncompromising authority. "And your access to the Ashford family trusts has been permanently revoked."

Graham let out a bark of incredulous laughter. "You can't do that! My grandfather left the company to me!"

"Your grandfather left the company to you with a strict, iron-clad morality and bloodline covenant," Thomas corrected him, sliding a legal document across the mahogany table. "He knew you were reckless, arrogant, and easily manipulated by women like Vanessa. The covenant explicitly stated that if you ever abandoned your legally wedded wife, or failed to provide for your firstborn heir, your controlling shares would instantly and irrevocably revert."

The blood drained from Graham’s face so fast he looked like a corpse. "Revert? Revert to who?!"

"To the heir," Thomas stated coldly. "Your son, Owen Mercer. And since Owen is a minor, the absolute, sole voting control of the Ashford empire now belongs entirely to his legal guardian and trustee. Claire."

Graham couldn't breathe. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train. By signing the irrevocable relinquishment of his parental rights to get rid of me, he had legally signed away his entire multi-billion-dollar company.

Panic, primal and terrifying, seized his chest. He turned and sprinted out of the boardroom. He broke every speed limit driving to St. Catherine's Medical Center. He ran through the sliding glass doors, shoving past nurses and orderlies, desperately searching for the woman and the child he had discarded like trash.

He burst through the doors of Room 412, tears of sheer terror streaming down his face, ready to beg on his knees.

But the room was completely silent. The bed was stripped to the mattress. The plastic bassinet was empty. I was already gone. Graham collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, clutching his chest, screaming into the deafening void of his own absolute ruin.
