Chapter 4 - The Rise of the Mercers

Five years later, the corporate landscape of Chicago had been completely rewritten.
I sat in the sprawling, sun-drenched corner office of the newly rebranded Mercer-Ashford Global Holdings. I was no longer the quiet, agreeable wife trying desperately to earn the affection of a man who despised me. I was the undisputed, untouchable CEO of a multi-billion-dollar empire.
I had taken the company, gutted the toxic executive culture Graham had fostered, and merged it with my father’s struggling manufacturing firm, saving my family's legacy in the process. We were more profitable than the Ashford grandfather had ever dreamed possible.
The heavy glass doors of my office swung open, and the sound of bright, echoing laughter filled the room.
"Mommy!"
Owen, a vibrant, brilliantly smart five-year-old with my dark hair and a smile that could light up a city, ran across the plush carpet and threw his arms around my legs. I scooped him up, pressing a kiss to his cheek, breathing in the sweet scent of his shampoo.
Behind him walked Julian, a leading architectural developer I had met during a massive real estate acquisition three years ago. Julian was tall, fiercely intelligent, and possessed a quiet, grounded confidence. Unlike Graham, Julian didn't need to diminish my power to feel like a man. He celebrated my strength, he championed my ambition, and he loved Owen as if he were his own flesh and blood.
"He insisted on coming up to see you before his soccer game," Julian smiled, his dark eyes crinkling with genuine, profound affection. He walked over and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead.

"I wouldn't miss it," I smiled, adjusting my tailored blazer. "Let me just sign these final acquisition papers, and we can go."
I looked out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering skyline below. I had built an unshakeable fortress for my son. He would never know the sting of abandonment, and he would never be used as a pawn by a cruel, arrogant family. He was loved, he was safe, and he was the sole heir to a kingdom I was building entirely for him.
