Chapter 10: The Open Door

Part 10: The Open Door

At 9:00 p.m., I walked back to the pharmacy to lock up.

The street was quiet.

The rain had stopped, leaving the pavement shining under the streetlights.

I turned off the main lights inside.

I set the alarm.

I locked the heavy glass door and pulled the security gate.

The metallic click echoed in the empty street.

It was a sound of absolute security.

I stood on the sidewalk and looked at the glowing sign above the door.

My name.

My business.

My life.

I thought about Preston’s question from a year ago.

“Is there any version where I didn’t lose you?”

He still thought it was about him losing me.

He never understood that it was about me finding myself.

Power isn’t about destroying someone else’s life.

It’s about building a room where they don't even exist.

A room where their voice can’t reach.

Where their money can’t buy the locks.

I put my keys in my coat pocket.

I turned away from the pharmacy.

I walked down the street, breathing in the cold, clean air of the city.

No shadows following me.

May you like

No expectations weighing me down.

Just the quiet, beautiful reality of a life that finally belonged entirely to me.
