Elias was tall, handsome, and radiated toxic, unearned confidence.

He stood too close to me, an intimidation tactic masquerading as friendliness.

“Maya,” he said smoothly. “I didn’t expect to see you here. I heard you were selling pills in a strip mall.”

I didn't flinch.

I didn't offer a witty, defensive comeback.

I just looked at him.

A subtle, almost pitying micro-expression crossed my face.

“I own an independent pharmacy, Elias,” I said evenly. “And it’s fully paid for. How is the leverage on your new Hudson project?”

His smile tightened. Just a fraction.

He didn't know how I knew about his over-leveraged debt.

In that three-second pause, Clara walked up behind him.

She looked terrified, but she masked it well.

I caught her eye over his shoulder.
