Part 27: The Evaporation of Power

Elias lunged forward, trying to grab Clara’s wrist.

The uniformed officer stepped smoothly into his path, placing a firm hand on Elias’s chest.

“Step back, Mr. Thorne,” the officer commanded.

“She is my wife!” Elias spat, his face red with rage. “She isn't going anywhere! I'll freeze every account. I'll take the boy. You'll be on the street tomorrow, Clara!”

My father stepped forward.

He didn't raise his voice. He simply reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a manila envelope.

He dropped it onto the glass coffee table.

“Those are copies of the forensic audit, Elias,” my father said quietly.

“The ones detailing your embezzlement from the Vanguard charity fund. Copies have already been filed with the federal prosecutor. If you attempt to block Clara's access to her personal funds, or if you ever approach this child again, that file becomes public tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.”

Elias looked down at the envelope.
