I looked at Clara.

I looked at the little boy holding her hand.

Three years ago, I would have told her to call a lawyer and turned away.

I would have protected my own peace at all costs.

But peace that ignores the suffering of others isn’t peace. It’s just isolation.

I didn’t offer her empty sympathy.

I didn’t tell her it was going to be okay.

I walked over to the front door, flipped the sign to Closed, and locked the deadbolt.

Then I pulled down the heavy security shades.

“Come to the back,” I said.

I poured her a cup of hot tea in the breakroom.

I didn't ask her for details of the abuse. I didn't need to hear the specifics of how a billionaire dismantles a woman’s self-worth. I already knew the blueprint.
