Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable Light

“Victoria Kensington,” the lead federal agent announced, stepping forward and pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for international wire fraud, market manipulation, and corporate embezzlement. Stand up and put your hands behind your back.”

The woman who had terrorized her own family, who had walked into my office demanding my son, let out a blood-curdling scream of pure, desperate agony. She thrashed as the agents grabbed her arms, wrenching them behind her back.

“You cannot do this to me! I am a Kensington!” Victoria roared, the absolute madness of her ruined ego fully exposed as the steel cuffs clicked shut. She glared at me with eyes full of venom and tears. “You are nothing but a gold-digger! You are nothing!”

“I am the mother of Leo Sterling,” I corrected her, my voice carrying the absolute, unshakeable power of a woman who had conquered her demons. “And I am the one who just erased the Kensington name from the face of the earth. Get her out of my building.”

I watched without a single ounce of pity as the federal agents dragged a sobbing, broken Victoria Kensington out of the boardroom. Her legacy was permanently annihilated. She would spend the rest of her life rotting in a federal penitentiary, entirely stripped of the wealth and power she had worshipped.

When the doors finally clicked shut, the silence in the boardroom was the most beautiful symphony I had ever heard.

David let out a long, shuddering breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He walked over to me, wrapping his strong, grounding arms around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. He buried his face in my neck, holding me so tightly I could feel the powerful, steady rhythm of his heart.

“It’s over,” David murmured, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to my skin. “It is completely, permanently over.”

“We did it,” I smiled, tears of absolute gratitude and relief spilling over my eyelashes. I leaned back, looking into the eyes of the man who had fought beside me in the trenches, who loved my son as his own, and who celebrated my strength every single day.

An hour later, David and I walked out of the glass towers of Sterling Global and returned to our penthouse.

I opened the front door to find Leo sitting on the living room rug, wearing his superhero pajamas, carefully assembling a massive, intricate Lego castle. When he heard us come in, his head snapped up. His dark eyes lit up with pure, unshadowed joy.

“Mom! Dad!” Leo squealed, abandoning his castle and sprinting across the room.

David caught him, swooping him up into his arms and spinning him around while Leo laughed a bright, beautiful sound that filled every corner of my soul. I wrapped my arms around them both, burying my face in my son’s warm hair, surrounded by the absolute, impenetrable fortress of our love.

I had walked through hell. I had been battered by betrayal, gaslit by a narcissist, and hunted by a corporate monster. But I had not burned. I had taken the fire and used it to forge a titanium spine.

As I looked at my beautiful, indestructible family, bathed in the warm glow of our home, I knew with absolute certainty that the darkness was permanently locked away. I had fought for my peace, I had protected my blood, and my beautiful, victorious life was finally, eternally mine.
