Chapter 16 - The Dead-Man’s Switch

The illusion of absolute security is the most intoxicating drug in the world. For exactly three months after Victoria Kensington was locked inside a federal penitentiary, I breathed in that security like oxygen. Our lives settled into a golden, sun-drenched rhythm. Sterling Global’s stock soared, absorbing the vacuum left by the Kensington collapse, and our penthouse echoed with nothing but Leo’s laughter and the deep, steady cadence of David’s voice. I believed the board was finally cleared. I believed the final villain had been vanquished.

I was wrong. apex predators never leave their legacy to chance; they leave a trap.

It began on a Tuesday evening. A massive, unseasonal blizzard was burying Chicago in feet of blinding white snow, sealing the city in a frozen dome. David was in the kitchen, rolling out pizza dough with Leo, their hands covered in flour, arguing playfully over how much mozzarella was legally permissible on a single slice. I was sitting on the velvet living room sofa, curled under a cashmere throw, smiling as I reviewed a flawless quarterly earnings report on my tablet.

Then, my encrypted private phone vibrated. The screen displayed a restricted international number. I answered, expecting an update from our European logistics team. Instead, the line hissed with digital static, followed by a synthetic, automated voice.

“The Victoria Protocol has been initiated. Target acquired. Execution in three, two, one.”

The line went dead. A cold, visceral spike of adrenaline pierced my chest, completely shattering the warmth of the room. Before I could even call David’s name, the massive flat-screen television mounted on our living room wall violently flickered. The cartoon Leo had paused vanished. In its place, every major news network broadcast the exact same breaking news alert in glaring red banners.

My tablet pinged. Then David’s phone rang. Then the secure landline. A synchronized, digital avalanche had just hit.

I stared at the television screen, the blood draining from my face until my skin felt like ice. The anchor’s voice was grim, reporting on a massive, anonymous data leak that had just flooded thousands of American social media channels, exploiting curiosity gaps to go violently viral in a matter of seconds. The broadcast played a video clip. It was David.

He was sitting in a dimly lit room, sliding a thick envelope of cash across a table to one of the federal judges who had presided over Victoria’s case. The audio was crystal clear. David’s voice was negotiating a bribe to falsely expedite Victoria’s sentencing in exchange for an unredacted list of Kensington Oil’s offshore accounts.

“Mom?” Leo asked, his flour-covered hands dropping to his sides as he stared at the screen. “Why is Dad on the TV?”

David walked out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel. He looked at the broadcast, and the towel slipped from his fingers, hitting the hardwood floor. He had never been in that room. He had never spoken to that judge outside of a heavily recorded federal courtroom. The video was a lie—a flawless, terrifyingly sophisticated deepfake engineered with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, designed to absolutely destroy the public trust and trigger a federal investigation.

The heavy, reinforced oak doors of our penthouse suddenly echoed with a thunderous, aggressive pounding.

“David Sterling!” a muffled voice barked from the hallway. “Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door immediately, or we will breach it!”

David looked at me, his dark eyes wide with sudden, horrifying realization. Victoria hadn't just gone to prison quietly. She had programmed a dead-man's switch, a digital guillotine set to drop the moment she lost her power.

“Clara, don't let them take Leo’s iPad. Don't let them touch your servers,” David whispered fiercely, his protective instincts overriding his own panic. He kissed my forehead hard, then knelt down to hug a terrified Leo. “I’ll be right back, buddy. I promise.”

I watched, completely paralyzed by a nightmare I thought I had already woken up from, as armed federal agents swarmed my beautiful sanctuary, pulling steel handcuffs from their belts and ripping the man I loved away from his family. The war wasn't over. A new ghost had just logged on.
