Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Deception

Three months passed, bringing a vibrant, breathtaking spring to Chicago. Sterling Global’s stock had skyrocketed following the successful integration of Kensington Oil’s renewable energy assets. I was no longer just a survivor of a toxic marriage; I was a titan of industry.
It was a Tuesday evening, and David had rented out the entire rooftop botanical garden of the city’s most exclusive restaurant. I arrived expecting a standard executive dinner, wearing a sleek, emerald-green evening gown. Instead, I walked into a breathtaking sanctuary illuminated by thousands of fairy lights and filled with the scent of white roses.
David stood at the center of the garden, looking incredibly handsome in a tailored black suit. When he took my hand, his dark eyes shone with a profound, unwavering adoration that still took my breath away. He didn't just love me; he revered the strength it took for me to rebuild my life.
“Clara,” David murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he gently pulled me close. “Five years ago, you walked into my firm looking for a lawyer. You ended up giving me a family. You and Leo are the absolute center of my universe. I don't want to spend another day on this earth without calling you my wife.”
He dropped to one knee, pulling a velvet box from his pocket to reveal a flawless, radiant-cut diamond ring. Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my eyelashes as I whispered a breathless, immediate yes.
But while I was celebrating the dawn of my beautiful new life, a viper was slithering through the shadows of the city.
Savannah had not simply faded into obscurity. Destitute and desperate, she had sought out the darkest corners of Wyatt’s former corporate rivals. She had managed to secure a clandestine meeting with Marcus Thorne, a ruthless venture capitalist who had lost millions during my hostile takeover of Kensington Oil.
“Clara Sterling destroyed my life, and she humiliated you,” Savannah hissed, sitting across from Thorne in a dimly lit, underground speakeasy. “I have access to Wyatt’s old encrypted hard drives. There are fabricated ledgers on there. Documents that can make it look like Clara manipulated the stock prices before the takeover. If you fund my legal team, I will personally leak them to the SEC and the press on the night of her engagement gala. We can burn her empire to the ground.”

Thorne smiled, a cold, predatory gleam in his eyes. He slid a thick envelope of cash across the table. Savannah grabbed it, her manicured fingers trembling with malicious anticipation. She genuinely believed she had found the perfect weapon to destroy me.
She had no idea that I already owned the armory.
