Chapter 17 - The Phantom Heir

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in psychological torture. The viral deepfake video of David blanketed the internet, weaponized by thousands of bot accounts and themed drama pages that manipulated the American public’s outrage. Sterling Global’s stock went into a terrifying freefall. David was held without bail in a federal detention center, the prosecutors refusing to listen to our cybersecurity experts who claimed the video was digitally generated. The illusion was simply too perfect, the rendering too flawless.
I did not weep. I did not break. I sent Leo to a highly secure, undisclosed location with my most trusted security detail, and I turned my corner office at Sterling Global into a fortified war room.
I fired my traditional PR firm. You cannot fight digital smoke with press releases and polite legal denials. I needed to hunt the architect. I bypassed the corporate firewall and dove directly into the raw, underlying traffic data of the viral campaign. The initial source of the deepfake wasn't a standard news outlet. It was seeded through a highly sophisticated, US-targeted traffic arbitrage network that utilized offshore servers to route millions of views into a massive digital echo chamber.
I recognized the architecture of the attack. It was a digital fingerprint I hadn't seen in years, a brutal, elegant coding style used exclusively in the darkest corners of corporate espionage.
“You found something, Clara?” my lead cybersecurity director asked, hovering nervously behind my chair as my fingers flew across the keyboard.
“I found the puppet master,” I said, my voice dropping to a lethal, uncompromising whisper.
I isolated the proxy IP address and forced a reverse-ping to a luxury high-rise located less than three miles from my office. I didn't send the police. I didn't send my lawyers. I went myself.
I walked past the bewildered concierge of the Onyx Tower, stepping into the private elevator and overriding the security scan with a cloned RFID tag. When the elevator doors parted on the penthouse floor, I stepped into a room that looked like a mirror image of my own war room. Massive, curved monitors lined the walls, displaying the real-time destruction of Sterling Global’s stock.
Sitting in a leather chair at the center of the room, swirling a glass of expensive bourbon, was a man who made my blood run cold.
He had the exact same piercing, icy blue eyes as Wyatt and Victoria. But where Wyatt had been weak and desperate, this man radiated an aura of pure, predatory intelligence.
“Damian,” I said, the name tasting like venom on my tongue.
Damian Kensington. Victoria’s eldest son, the bastard child she had ruthlessly disowned and scrubbed from the public record thirty years ago. He had spent his entire life in the shadows, building an untraceable empire in cyber-warfare and digital manipulation, waiting for the day his mother and half-brother destroyed themselves so he could claim the throne.
“Clara Sterling,” Damian smiled, a slow, chilling expression that didn't reach his eyes. He took a sip of his bourbon. “I must say, I am profoundly impressed you found me this quickly. You always were the smartest person in the room.”

“You framed my husband,” I said, stepping forward, my crimson coat sweeping behind me like a cape. “You engineered that deepfake to trigger a federal indictment. You want the board to force me out due to the scandal.”
“I want what is rightfully mine,” Damian corrected, standing up, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the monitors. “Victoria was a dinosaur. Wyatt was an idiot. But you and I, Clara? We understand the modern world. We understand that truth is no longer what happens; truth is what the algorithm decides to show people. Sign over fifty-one percent of Sterling Global to my offshore holding company. Do it by midnight, and the raw, unedited source files proving David’s innocence will miraculously find their way to the FBI. He comes home to your son. Refuse, and your husband spends twenty years in federal prison while I burn your company to the ground.”
