Chapter 8 - The Engagement Ambush

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of elegance, packed with three hundred of the most influential politicians, investors, and socialites in the Midwest. David and I were celebrating our engagement, surrounded by a fortress of loyalty and love. Leo was asleep in the penthouse suite upstairs, safely guarded by my elite private security detail.
Just as David raised his glass to offer a toast, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom violently burst open.
Savannah stormed into the gala, wearing a cheap, flashy red dress that reeked of desperation. She was flanked by two sleazy tabloid reporters holding cameras. The string quartet stopped playing abruptly. The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence.
“Don't drink to her just yet!” Savannah shrieked, waving a thick stack of printed documents in the air, her eyes wild with manufactured hysteria. “Clara Sterling is a fraud! I have the internal ledgers! She manipulated the market to steal Kensington Oil! She belongs in a federal penitentiary, not a ballroom!”
The guests gasped, murmuring in shocked confusion. David’s jaw tightened, and he moved to step in front of me, his protective instincts instantly flaring. I placed a gentle, calming hand on his chest and stepped around him.
I didn't yell. I didn't call for security immediately. I simply offered Savannah a cold, terrifying smile.
“Savannah,” I said, my voice projecting effortlessly across the silent room, dripping with absolute authority. “It is incredibly brave of you to bring those documents here tonight. Especially since Marcus Thorne’s encrypted servers were seized by the FBI at four o’clock this afternoon.”
Savannah froze, the blood completely draining from her face. Her hand, holding the fabricated ledgers, began to shake violently.
“You see,” I continued, walking slowly down the steps of the stage, my emerald gown gliding over the marble floor. “When you accessed Wyatt’s old hard drives, you triggered a silent digital tripwire my cybersecurity team installed three months ago. We watched you fabricate the ledgers in real-time. We tracked your communications with Marcus Thorne. We recorded the extortion transaction at the speakeasy.”
I stopped a few feet away from her, looking her dead in the eyes. “You didn't uncover a conspiracy, Savannah. You just provided the federal government with irrefutable proof of corporate blackmail, forgery, and extortion.”
Right on cue, the side doors of the ballroom opened. Four federal agents wearing dark windbreakers stepped into the light, their badges gleaming.
“Savannah Cole,” the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for federal extortion and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Put your hands behind your back.”

Savannah let out a blood-curdling scream of pure, unadulterated panic as the agents grabbed her arms. She thrashed wildly, screaming obscenities at me as the reporters she had brought to document my downfall eagerly snapped photos of her being dragged out of the ballroom in chains.
I turned back to my guests, raising my crystal glass of champagne. “I apologize for the interruption, everyone. Please, enjoy the rest of your evening.”
