Chapter 16 - The Deepfake ProtocolPeace is a beautiful, seductive lie. It wraps you in cashmere and whispers that the war is over, lulling you into a false sense of security while your enemies sharpen their knives in the dark. For women who build global empires, peace is never a destination. It is simply the quiet intake of breath before the next storm breaks.

For three flawless years following the collapse of the Obsidian Group, my life with David was a masterclass in absolute serenity. Our Hamptons estate was a sanctuary. Our son, Leo, was now a bright, fearless three-year-old with his father’s dark eyes and my relentless curiosity. My marketing agency had transcended the corporate realm. We were no longer just dictating global trends; we were the undisputed architects of global commerce, handling the exclusive marketing rights for top-tier tech conglomerates and sovereign wealth funds.
We were untouchable.
It was a crisp Tuesday morning in early October. The Atlantic wind was howling outside our private sunroom. I was sitting on the plush velvet sofa, wearing a tailored navy blazer, reviewing the final launch metrics for a massive European telecommunications rollout. David was sitting across from me, sipping espresso and reading the Wall Street Journal.
Then, my encrypted corporate satellite phone—the one reserved strictly for Tier-One emergencies—vibrated violently against the glass coffee table.
David lowered his newspaper. The relaxed, devoted husband vanished in a microsecond, replaced by the lethal, calculating venture capitalist.
I put the phone on speaker. "Maya speaking."
"Maya, I need you to turn on the news right now," Elena’s voice crackled through the line. My Director of Digital Strategy sounded breathless, teetering on the edge of a full-blown panic attack. "Turn on CNN. Turn on Bloomberg. It’s everywhere."
David grabbed the remote and flicked on the massive flat-screen above the fireplace.
My blood instantly turned to liquid nitrogen.
Playing on a continuous, global loop was a leaked audio and video recording. It was me. Or, at least, it looked exactly like me. The woman on the screen, wearing my exact clothes and speaking in my exact voice, was sitting in what looked like my Manhattan boardroom, explicitly discussing a massive, illegal market manipulation scheme to short-sell European tech stocks.
"The SEC just issued an emergency freeze on our global operating accounts," Elena breathed, her voice shaking. "Maya, the European markets are in a free-fall. Our clients are panicking. The Department of Justice just announced a press conference for noon to discuss criminal indictments against you for international fraud."
"It’s a deepfake," David growled, his jaw locking into a rigid line of pure granite. "It’s synthetic media. Highly advanced AI."
"It’s flawless," Elena whispered in terror. "The biometric markers, the vocal cadence—it passes every standard digital authenticity test. The media believes it’s real. Maya, if we can't prove this is a fabrication by the time the markets close on Friday, the agency goes into automatic default. We lose everything."

I stared at the screen, watching a digital phantom of myself destroy my life's work in real-time. I didn't panic. The terrified girl who used to shrink from danger was long dead.
"Someone is using military-grade artificial intelligence to orchestrate a global corporate coup," I whispered, the fire in my veins turning to absolute ice. "Elena, lock down the servers. David, get the jet fueled. We are going to Manhattan. And we are going to find the architect of this lie and bury them in it."
