Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the AlgorithmPeace, in the upper echelons of Manhattan’s corporate world, is an illusion. It is merely the quiet intake of breath before the next knife is thrown in the dark.

For six glorious months following our trip to the Amalfi Coast, my life with David was a masterclass in flawless execution. My marketing agency had evolved from a rising startup into a global sovereign entity. We weren't just running ad campaigns; we were designing the cultural zeitgeist.
It was a crisp Tuesday morning in late October. The Atlantic wind was howling outside my corner office, lashing rain against the floor-to-ceiling glass. I was sitting at my mahogany desk, wearing a tailored, stark-white Alexander McQueen blazer, reviewing the final assets for our most lucrative international contract to date: Slink.
Slink was a revolutionary wearable tech brand, and they had handed my agency a fifty-million-dollar budget to break them into the American market.
My Director of Digital Strategy, Elena, walked into the office and handed me a tablet displaying the final video advertisement.
"The visuals are flawless," I said, my eyes tracking the sleek, high-octane footage of the Slink campaign. "But the caption for this video ad about Slink needs to be sharper. It’s too generic. We need to emphasize the absolute exclusivity of the product, but we have to be incredibly careful. I want this campaign optimized for Facebook, and you know how aggressive their moderation bots have been this quarter. Ensure the copy strictly complies with Facebook’s advertising standards."
"Already on it, Maya," Elena nodded, making a note on her clipboard. "The launch is set for midnight. We have the budget allocated, the targeting is locked, and David’s venture firm just greenlit the secondary funding for the European rollout."
I smiled, a profound sense of satisfaction settling in my chest. David and I were building an empire, side by side.
Then, my private, encrypted cell phone buzzed. It wasn't my corporate line. It was the emergency number I had kept active solely to monitor the ashes of my past.
I looked at the screen. The caller ID was blocked, but a single text message appeared.
Did you really think the water washed away your sins, Maya? See you at midnight.
My blood instantly turned to liquid nitrogen. The air completely evacuated my lungs.
Only one person knew what had happened on that freezing December night. Only one person had stood on the edge of the icy dock, laughing mockingly as the freezing water filled my lungs, leaving me to drown so he could steal the seed capital for my first company.
Caleb.
He was supposed to be a ghost. He had fled the state when I survived, vanishing into the criminal underbelly of the tech world.

I didn't panic. The terrified, freezing woman he had tried to kill was dead. I locked my phone and placed it face down on the desk. A dark, terrifying smile spread across my face.
"Elena," I said softly, the fire in my veins turning to absolute ice. "Lock down the Slink campaign servers. Caleb is back. And he’s coming for the launch."
