Chapter 17 - The Silicon SiegeYou do not fight a synthetic ghost by playing defense. By the time you issue a press release denying the allegations, the public has already convicted you, and the billionaire predators have already bought your bleeding company for pennies on the dollar.

By noon, the executive floor of my Manhattan skyscraper had been transformed into a militarized cyber-intelligence bunker. I stood at the head of the glass conference table, projecting the deepfake video onto the smart-board.
"Whoever generated this video needed massive computing power and an intimate knowledge of my vocal patterns and micro-expressions," I told my team of elite data analysts and crisis managers. "They also needed the capital to ensure this video bypassed the major news networks' internal vetting processes simultaneously. Who has that kind of infrastructure?"
"I found the origin node," our lead cyber-forensics hacker, Elias, announced, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "The video wasn't leaked by a whistleblower. It was seeded through a decentralized block-chain server located in the Cayman Islands. But I traced the initial server ping. It came from a localized IP address in Silicon Valley."
Elias brought up a corporate logo on the screen. Vanguard Media.
David’s eyes darkened with instant recognition. "Arthur Vance."
The name hit the room like a physical blow. Arthur Vance was an old-money media baron. For decades, his traditional media conglomerate had controlled the global narrative. But over the last three years, my digital marketing agency had rendered his archaic television networks and print empires completely obsolete. We had taken his crown, and he had been bleeding billions ever since.
"Arthur is desperate," I deduced, my mind operating with surgical precision. "He can't beat us in the legitimate market, so he’s using unregulated, black-market AI to frame me for a federal crime. If my agency collapses under an SEC investigation, his media conglomerate swoops in to reclaim a monopoly on global advertising."
"He’s hosting the Global Media Summit at the Plaza Hotel tonight," Elena noted, pulling up Arthur’s itinerary. "He’s scheduled to give a keynote address on 'The Dangers of Unregulated Digital Monopolies.' He’s going to use your deepfake scandal as the centerpiece of his speech."

"He thinks he’s checkmated us," David rumbled, radiating a quiet, lethal menace. "He thinks you’re going to spend the next forty-eight hours cowering in a lawyer's office trying to avoid federal prison."
"He doesn't know who he picked a fight with," I said softly, a dark, terrifying smile spreading across my face. "Elias, Arthur used artificial intelligence to fabricate a reality. I want you to breach Vanguard Media’s private servers. Find the physical rendering files. Find the receipts. And then, we are going to crash his little summit."
