Chapter 17 - The Trojan Horse GalaBy Friday evening, the Moretti Foundation’s annual charity gala was in full swing. The grand ballroom of the Chicago Drake Hotel was a sea of bespoke tuxedos, million-dollar diamonds, and vintage champagne. To the outside world, I was the charming, philanthropic billionaire playing the perfect host.

Internally, I was a predator hunting in a crowded room.

Over the past forty-eight hours, my AI architecture had traced the phantom ping. The blackmailer wasn't hiding in a basement in Eastern Europe. They were a ghost in the high-society machine—a ghost who had to be physically present in Chicago to trigger the localized malware payload they had planted in our servers.

Sofia looked breathtaking in a deep emerald silk gown, effortlessly working the room, securing millions in donations with her brilliant, warm smile. But every time our eyes met, I saw the lethal sharpness beneath her grace. She knew exactly what was happening. We were a united, terrifying front.

"Adrian," a smooth, overly confident voice called out.

I turned, handing my champagne flute to a passing waiter. Standing before me was Julian Vance. He was a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who had recently pivoted to private equity in the Midwest. He was flawlessly groomed, wearing a Tom Ford suit, and sporting a smile that didn't quite reach his cold, dead eyes.

"Julian," I said, offering a firm, calculated handshake. "I wasn't aware you were in Chicago."

"I go where the capital flows, Adrian," Julian replied, swirling his whiskey. He leaned in slightly, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I have to admit, I was incredibly impressed by how efficiently you dismantled Thorne. But nature abhors a vacuum. When a shadow economy collapses, someone has to buy up the distressed assets. The data scraps. The leftover clone accounts."

My blood ran ice cold, but my expression remained completely unreadable. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean. The authorities seized all of Thorne's assets."

Julian chuckled, a dry, arrogant sound. "The authorities seized the hardware. But the digital architecture? The backdoors? I acquired those. For a bargain, really." He took a slow sip of his drink. "You have a beautiful daughter, Adrian. Elara, isn't it? It would be a profound tragedy if the pediatric hospitals she so dearly loves suddenly found their network infrastructure... compromised."

There it was. The threat, delivered to my face, in the middle of a crowded ballroom. Julian Vance wasn't just a venture capitalist; he was the apex predator who had been funding Thorne from the shadows.

"You’re playing a very dangerous game, Julian," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, laced with pure titanium.

Julian smirked, straightening his tie. "It’s only dangerous if you can lose, Adrian. You have twenty-four hours left on the clock. Enjoy the party."

As he walked away, disappearing into the crowd, Sofia materialized at my side. She slipped her arm through mine, her grip like iron.

"Was that him?" she asked softly.

"Yes," I replied, my eyes locked on the exit. "He thinks he has the upper hand. He thinks he planted a bomb in our servers."

Sofia’s lips curved into a dangerous, beautiful smile. "Did you tell him about the steel?"

"Not yet," I whispered. "I'm going to let him lock the doors himself before we burn his empire to the ground."
