Chapter 8 - The Steel Siege

While I was silently dismantling Kensington’s empire in the digital realm, he decided to accelerate the timeline in the physical world. Apex predators cannot stand to wait.

It was 4:00 AM. The winter storm was howling against the estate. Sofia and I were still in the kitchen, downloading decades of Kensington’s corrupt payrolls, cartel bribes, and offshore laundering receipts.

Suddenly, the perimeter alarms of the estate shrieked, a high-pitched wail that sliced right through the howling wind.

I pulled the biometric lockbox from beneath the steel island and retrieved my weapon, racking the slide with a heavy, metallic crack. Through the internal security monitors, I watched four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear storm across the snow-covered lawn. They weren't police. They were a private, elite hit squad hired by Kensington to physically seize the Foundation's access keys before the deadline.

"Take Elara to the panic room," I commanded Sofia, my voice entirely devoid of fear. "Lock the steel bulkheads. Do not open them for anyone but me."

I killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

I stood my ground in the kitchen. The space wasn't just designed for culinary perfection; it was a tactical fatal funnel. The solid stainless-steel cabinets provided flawless ballistic cover.

The mercenaries kicked through the heavy wooden front doors, their laser sights cutting through the dark foyer. They moved with terrifying precision, sweeping the rooms, expecting to find a panicked, helpless philanthropist. They didn't realize they had just walked into the home of a man who was forged in the absolute darkest fires of the Chicago underworld.

As the first two mercenaries entered the kitchen, I used the reflection of the moonlight against the stainless-steel refrigerator to perfectly track their movements. I triggered the estate’s internal security countermeasures from my phone. Blinding, high-intensity strobe lights violently flashed to life, accompanied by a deafening, high-frequency acoustic deterrent.

The mercenaries dropped to their knees, completely blinded and disoriented.

I moved like a ghost, outflanking them in my own home. I didn't fire a single bullet. I triggered the localized Halon gas suppression system I had installed in the kitchen ceiling. The dense, oxygen-depleting gas flooded the room, instantly choking the mercenaries into unconsciousness. Within sixty seconds, the physical threat to my family was permanently dismantled on the very floor I had built to protect them.
