Chapter 4 - The NICU Vows

When I returned to the hospital, the atmosphere had shifted. The sterile panic of the previous days was gone, replaced by a cautious, fragile hope. The NICU nurses greeted me with soft smiles.

“She’s breathing on her own, Mr. Moretti,” a nurse whispered, pointing toward Elara’s incubator.

I approached the plastic box. My tiny daughter was no longer hooked up to the terrifying ventilator. A small nasal cannula provided oxygen, and her color was a healthy, beautiful pink. I reached my finger through the circular port, and for the first time, her impossibly small hand wrapped around my knuckle.

Tears blurred my vision. I stood there for an hour, just feeling the strength of her tiny grip.

“She has your stubbornness.”

I turned. Sofia was sitting in a wheelchair just inside the NICU doors, pushed by her mother. She looked exhausted, still wearing a hospital gown, but the color had returned to her cheeks.

I quickly wiped my eyes and moved to her side, kneeling next to her wheelchair so we were eye-to-level. “She has your beauty. And your strength. She fought through this because she knew you were waiting for her.”

Sofia looked at Elara, her eyes overflowing with love and sorrow. “I wanted to tell you, Adrian. When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to run to you. But then I saw the clinic documents. I thought... I thought you were part of it. I thought you faked the results so you would have an excuse to divorce me and be with Bianca.”

The words felt like a knife twisting in my gut. “Sofia, look at me.” I took both of her hands in mine, kissing her palms gently. “I was a blind, arrogant fool. I allowed the grief of our miscarriages to turn me cold. I failed you as a husband when you needed me the most. But I would rather die a thousand times over than intentionally hurt you. I never loved Bianca. I never loved anyone but you.”

Sofia looked down at our joined hands. “Adrian, so much has happened. So much damage.”

“I know,” I said fiercely. “I’m not asking you to forgive me today. I’m not asking you to just forget the last year. But I am begging you to let me try. Let me prove to you that I am a man worthy of being your husband, and a father worthy of Elara. I dismantled the Russos today. They are gone. Their assets belong to our daughter now. The syndicate is stepping into legitimate business. No more danger. No more lies. Just us.”

Sofia didn’t pull away. She reached out with a trembling hand, tracing the dark circles under my eyes. “You look terrible, Adrian.”

I let out a wet, genuine laugh. “I haven't slept in four days. I was terrified I was going to lose you.”

May you like

“I’m still here,” she whispered, her voice soft but resolute. “And I’m not going anywhere. But you have to earn this, Adrian. You have to earn us back.”

“I will spend the rest of my life doing exactly that.” I stood up, gently leaning over to press a kiss to her forehead, and for the first time in nearly a year, I felt like I was finally home.
