Chapter 10 - The Queen's GambitThe underground boardroom of the Romano syndicate was hidden beneath a luxury hotel in Midtown Manhattan. It was a cavernous room of dark oak, thick cigar smoke, and heavy, suffocating tension.

Ten of Dante’s most powerful capos sat around the massive conference table. At the far end sat Carlo, the silver-haired, impeccably dressed consigliere. He projected an aura of calm, reasonable leadership, perfectly masking the treason rotting in his chest.

Dante sat at the head of the table. He was a statue of cold, simmering violence, his hands resting flat on the mahogany wood.

"This war with the Morettis is bleeding us, Dante," Carlo was saying, his voice echoing in the quiet room. He looked around the table, garnering nods of agreement from the older captains. "We are losing shipments. We are losing men. All because you broke the treaty over a personal... liability. The woman and the child are a distraction. For the good of the family, we must offer Salvatore peace terms."

"Peace terms," Dante repeated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "You want me to surrender."

"I want you to be reasonable," Carlo sighed, playing the part of the weary advisor to perfection. "You are acting on emotion, Boss. The family requires stability. If you cannot provide it, perhaps the commission needs to vote on a temporary restructuring of leadership."

There it was. The coup. The room went dead silent. The capos looked at Dante, waiting for the explosion.

Instead, the heavy oak double doors of the boardroom swung open.

The capos turned, expecting to see Matteo or a security detail.

Instead, I walked into the room.

I did not look like a frightened mother who had just survived a home invasion. I wore a tailored, stark-white Alexander McQueen suit—a physical manifestation of an untouchable, absolute authority. My heels clicked sharply against the marble floor, the only sound in the stunned, silent room. Matteo and two massive enforcers walked three paces behind me, securing the door.

I walked the entire length of the table and stopped directly behind Dante’s chair. I placed a thick, red-tabbed dossier on the mahogany wood in front of him.

Carlo’s face drained of color. He stared at me as if he had seen a ghost.

"Who let her in here?" Carlo barked, his calm facade shattering instantly. "This is family business! She is an outsider!"

"I am the mother of the heir to this syndicate, Carlo," I stated, my voice ringing crystal clear, echoing with absolute, freezing authority. "I am not an outsider. I am the architect of this family's survival."

I turned to the stunned capos.

"Carlo has called Dante’s leadership emotional and reckless," I said, projecting my voice like a CEO addressing a hostile board of directors. "He claims the Moretti war is bleeding your profits. But Carlo isn't interested in your profits. He is interested in his own."

I pressed a button on the remote in my hand, illuminating the massive digital screen at the end of the boardroom. The offshore routing numbers, the Cayman Island trust documents, and the Macau casino skim reports flashed onto the screen in high-definition clarity.

"Over the last six months, your honorable consigliere has embezzled fifteen million dollars from the family’s casino operations," I explained, slicing through the tension like a scalpel. "He routed that money into a blind trust co-owned by the Moretti family. Carlo sold Dante’s location, and my son’s life, to Salvatore Moretti in exchange for the financial backing to execute this coup."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Capos stood up, shouting, drawing weapons. The absolute betrayal of a consigliere stealing from his own captains was the ultimate sin.

"It’s a lie!" Carlo screamed, sweating profusely, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She forged those documents! She’s trying to destroy us from the inside!"

"The digital forensics have already been verified by the family's independent accountants, Carlo," I replied smoothly, ignoring the chaos, my eyes locked on him with profound, untouchable pity. "The money trail is absolute. You thought you could orchestrate a hostile takeover by targeting a child. But you forgot that the child has a mother who knows how to read a balance sheet."

Dante finally stood up.

The room instantly fell silent. The air grew heavy, suffocating under the weight of Dante’s murderous aura.

He didn't yell. He didn't argue. He walked slowly around the table toward Carlo.

Carlo stumbled backward, his chair tipping over with a loud crash. "Dante, please. We grew up together. She’s manipulating you! She’s a witch!"

Dante drew his Kimber 1911 in a blur of motion. He pressed the barrel directly against Carlo’s forehead.

"You touched my family," Dante whispered, his voice a demonic, absolute finality. "You tried to sell my son."

Bang.

The gunshot deafened the room. Carlo’s body hit the floor before the echo even faded.

Dante didn't look at the body. He holstered his weapon, pulled a silk handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped a speck of blood from his cuff. He looked around the table at the terrified, silent capos.

"The Moretti syndicate is dead," Dante announced, his voice vibrating with absolute command. "By midnight tonight, I want every warehouse they own burning. I want Salvatore’s head on my desk. Dismissed."

The capos scrambled out of the room, terrified and absolutely loyal once again.

When the doors closed, it was just Dante and me in the cavernous, blood-stained room.

Dante turned to look at me. The cold, ruthless executioner vanished. He stared at me with a mixture of profound awe, terrifying pride, and a dark, consuming hunger. I hadn't just survived his world; I had conquered it.

He walked slowly toward me, stepping over the body without a glance. He stopped inches away, his towering frame casting a shadow over me. He reached out, his rough hands gripping my waist, pulling me flush against his chest.

"You didn't need my protection," Dante murmured, his green eyes burning into my soul. "You just needed my army."

I reached up, lacing my fingers through his dark hair, pulling his face down to mine.

May you like

"I told you, Dante," I whispered against his lips, the terrified single mother permanently buried, the queen finally claiming her throne. "I fix crises. And you and I are going to rule this city together."

He crashed his mouth over mine in a fierce, passionate, possessive kiss, sealing our bloody, unbreakable pact. The ghosts were dead. The war was won. And my son’s future was going to last forever.
