Chapter 19 - The Vault of ShadowsThe subterranean levels of the Banque de L'Ombre were a masterpiece of sterile, terrifying silence. The walls were lined with brushed steel, and the air smelled faintly of ozone and old money.

We descended via a private glass elevator, the digital display counting down the floors into the earth. Dante stood perfectly still beside me, his hands relaxed at his sides, projecting the horrifying calm of an executioner about to pull the lever. I felt the adrenaline singing in my veins, but my face remained an impenetrable mask of absolute authority.

The elevator doors chimed and slid open.

We stepped into the main vault antechamber. It was a sprawling, ultra-modern room featuring a massive glass conference table and a reinforced titanium bulkhead door at the far end.

Sitting at the table was Don Vincenzo, wearing a smug, arrogant expression, flanked by four massive Sicilian enforcers. Across from him sat Julian Croft, the Swiss banker, nervously tapping a tablet.

When the elevator doors opened, the room froze.

Vincenzo’s smug smile vanished. The color completely drained from his face as he stared at the two people who were supposed to be cowering in New York.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian Croft shrieked, jumping to his feet. "Security! How did you get in here?!"

"Your security is currently taking a nap on the pavement, Mr. Croft," I said smoothly, stepping out of the elevator. My heels clicked sharply against the polished concrete floor, the only sound in the stunned room. Dante walked right beside me, a shadow of pure, unadulterated death.

"Kill them!" Vincenzo roared, pointing a trembling finger at us.

His four enforcers reached inside their jackets.

They didn't even clear their holsters.

Dante moved with a terrifying, supernatural speed. He drew his twin Kimber 1911s. Four suppressed gunshots—pfft, pfft, pfft, pfft—echoed in rapid succession. The four Sicilian enforcers dropped to the floor instantly, perfect, symmetrical holes between their eyes.

The room was bathed in the smell of cordite and copper.

Julian Croft screamed, falling backward over his chair and scrambling into the corner, weeping in sheer terror.

Vincenzo remained frozen in his chair, staring at the bodies of his elite guards. He looked up at Dante, realizing for the first time that he was not dealing with a businessman. He was dealing with a monster.

"You..." Vincenzo choked out, his voice barely a rasp. "You are a dead man, Dante. The Commission will hunt you to the ends of the earth."

"The Commission is bankrupt, Vincenzo," I stated coldly, walking over to the glass table. I picked up the tablet Croft had dropped.

"You can't touch the funds," Vincenzo sneered, recovering a fraction of his aristocratic arrogance. "The vault requires a dual-biometric retinal scan from me and the banker to execute the transfer. Without it, the money is locked forever."

"I know," I smiled—a dark, razor-sharp expression. I looked at Elias, who had stepped out of the elevator behind us. "Elias. Now."

Elias set the silver briefcase on the table, flipped a switch, and hit a red button.

A high-pitched, electronic whine filled the room, followed by a concussive, invisible wave. The lights in the antechamber flickered violently and died, plunging the room into total darkness for a split second before the dim, red emergency backups kicked in.

The EMP had fried the localized security grid. But more importantly, it disabled the vault’s fail-safe locks.

"The biometrics are offline, Vincenzo," I whispered in the red glow of the room. "The vault is currently running on analog override. Which means I don't need your eyes."

I pulled a heavy, encrypted drive from my clutch and plugged it directly into the analog port on the side of the titanium bulkhead. My fingers flew across the manual override keyboard.

"What are you doing?!" Vincenzo demanded, lunging forward.

Dante grabbed him by the throat with one hand, slamming him face-first into the glass table.

"I am executing a hostile takeover," I said, not taking my eyes off the screen. "I am currently overriding the routing protocols. Two billion dollars in cartel and extortion revenue is being siphoned out of your holding accounts. But I’m not transferring it to Aegis, Vincenzo. That would be messy."

I hit the final execute key. The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

"I just transferred the entire treasury of the Sicilian Commission into a decentralized cryptocurrency tumbler, and routed it directly to an irrevocable global charity trust managed by the United Nations," I announced, my voice echoing with absolute finality.

Vincenzo let out a horrifying, guttural scream of pure despair. "No! No, you stole it! You stole everything!"

"I didn't steal it. I erased it," I corrected, stepping closer to the broken old man pinned to the table by my husband. "The oldest mafia families in the world are currently broke. They cannot pay their soldiers. They cannot pay their politicians. By tomorrow morning, your empire will cannibalize itself."

I leaned down, bringing my face inches from his.

"You threatened my son," I whispered softly. "I told you I fight with live ammunition. You wanted my kingdom? Congratulations. You now rule an empire of ashes."

I looked at Dante. The cold, ruthless executioner stared back at me with a profound, consuming hunger.

"He’s all yours," I said.

Dante didn't use a gun. He dragged the screaming emissary into the shadows. I didn't flinch. I just smoothed the lapels of my coat and walked back to the elevator.
