Chapter 13 - The Federal GhostPeace is the most dangerous illusion in the world of organized crime. It lulls you into dropping your armor.

Two flawless months had passed since the night the Moretti syndicate burned to ash. My transition from a crisis consultant to the official underboss of the Romano family was seamless. Under my direction, the syndicate’s illicit cash flow was aggressively funneled into legitimate, high-end real estate and tech startups. We were no longer just a mafia family; we were a Fortune 500 conglomerate with a very aggressive enforcement division.

Dante and I were untouchable.

Until the federal government decided to rewrite the rules of engagement.

It was a crisp Tuesday morning. I was sitting in my corner office at Aegis Consulting, reviewing the final integration protocols for a new casino in Macau, when Clara burst through the glass doors. She didn't knock, and her face was drained of all color.

"Ms. Rossi," Clara stammered, clutching a stack of legal documents to her chest. "The FBI is in the lobby. They have a federal warrant. They are freezing the firm's primary operating accounts."

The air evacuated my lungs. I stood up instantly, my mind racing. I had buried the paper trails under layers of sovereign encryption. A federal freeze was impossible without a leak.

"Keep them in the lobby, Clara," I commanded, projecting a calm I did not feel. "I will be out in a moment."

I grabbed my encrypted phone and dialed Dante. He answered on the first ring.

"The feds are in my lobby," I said, skipping the greeting. "They brought a freeze order for Aegis."

"I know," Dante’s voice was dark, vibrating with a lethal, coiled fury. "They just hit two of our legitimate shipping hubs in Brooklyn and a development trust in New Jersey. They aren't looking for drugs or guns, Elena. They are executing a coordinated, simultaneous RICO raid on our corporate fronts."

"Who signed the warrants?" I demanded.

"Special Agent in Charge William Hayes," Dante spat the name like venom. "He’s the head of the newly formed Organized Crime and Financial Fraud Task Force. He’s ambitious, heavily funded, and he’s been building this case in the dark for a year."

"Don't retaliate, Dante," I warned immediately. "If your men fire a single shot at a federal agent, they can label us a domestic terror threat. Stand down. Let them take the hard drives. They are heavily encrypted; it will take them months to crack the firewalls."

"I am not letting them touch your firm, Elena," Dante growled.

"You aren't," I said, walking toward the office door, smoothing the lapels of my tailored blazer. "I am going to handle Agent Hayes."

I walked out into the sleek, modern lobby of Aegis Consulting. Half a dozen armed FBI agents in tactical windbreakers were securing the reception desk. Standing in the center of the room, looking entirely too smug in a cheap gray suit, was Special Agent William Hayes.

He was in his late forties, with a sharp, weasel-like face and eyes that gleamed with arrogant, unchecked ambition.

"Ms. Rossi," Hayes smiled, holding up a federal warrant as if it were a hunting trophy. "Or should I say, Mrs. Romano? We know about the ring. And we know about the blood money you’ve been washing for your fiancé’s syndicate. We are seizing this firm’s assets pending a full RICO indictment."

"Agent Hayes," I replied, my voice echoing with absolute, freezing authority. I didn't look at the warrant. I looked directly through him. "You are trespassing on private property, disrupting a legitimate corporate entity, and harassing my employees based on a fictionalized narrative you concocted to boost your political profile."

Hayes chuckled, stepping closer, attempting to physically intimidate me. "You’re good, I’ll give you that. You dress like a CEO. You talk like a lawyer. But at the end of the day, you’re just a mob wife who learned how to use a spreadsheet. When our cyber division cracks your servers, I am going to put you and Dante in adjacent federal cages for the rest of your lives."

I didn't flinch. I tilted my head, looking at him with profound, untouchable pity.

"You are making a catastrophic mistake, William," I whispered softly. "You think you are hunting a street thug. You don't realize you just declared war on a machine that can buy and sell your entire career before lunch."

"Take her servers," Hayes barked at his agents, his face flushing with anger.

I stood perfectly still as the federal agents dismantled my lobby. They thought they were dismantling my empire. They didn't know that the servers they were taking were intentionally loaded with decoy algorithms designed to waste their time.

Agent Hayes had just crossed a line. And I was going to utterly destroy him.
