Chapter 11 - The City of AshPower is not a static thing. It is a living, breathing entity that requires constant feeding. For five years, I had fed my power with corporate acquisitions, legal loopholes, and the pristine, sterile environment of boardroom negotiations. But as I stood in the penthouse of the Romano Tower, looking out over the glittering expanse of Manhattan, I realized that true, absolute power tasted like smoke.

It was 2:00 AM. The city below us was burning.
From the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see the distant, angry orange glows rising from the Brooklyn shipyards and the Queens industrial districts. Dante’s capos were executing his orders with terrifying, ruthless efficiency. Every warehouse, every illegal casino, and every front company owned by the Moretti syndicate was being systematically incinerated. The war wasn't just being won; it was being erased.
I stood near the glass, wearing one of Dante’s oversized black dress shirts, the silk cold against my skin. The adrenaline of the boardroom coup had faded, leaving behind a sharp, hyper-focused clarity.
I heard the heavy, measured footsteps behind me.
Dante walked into the room. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, the top buttons of his shirt undone, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos that inked his chest. He held two glasses of vintage bourbon, handing one to me as he stepped up to the glass.
"Matteo just called in," Dante’s voice was a low, vibrating rumble that perfectly matched the distant sirens echoing through the city. "The Moretti docks are gone. Their northern supply lines are severed. And my men just intercepted three of Salvatore’s lieutenants trying to flee to New Jersey."
"And Salvatore?" I asked, taking a slow sip of the burning liquid, my eyes never leaving the fires.
"He’s cornered," Dante stated, his pitch-black eyes reflecting the flames. "He retreated to a fortified safe house in the Bronx. He has two dozen heavily armed mercenaries barricaded inside with him. He thinks he can hold out until the feds intervene to stop the violence."
"He’s waiting for a cavalry that isn't coming," I murmured, turning to look at my husband—the man who had shattered my world and then handed me the pieces to rebuild it. "The local precincts are on your payroll, Dante. But if Salvatore holds out until sunrise, the FBI will be forced to mobilize a tactical team. If they raid that safe house before you do, Salvatore will cut a deal. He’ll trade your name for federal protection."
Dante’s jaw locked. He reached out, his rough, calloused fingers wrapping gently around my waist, pulling me flush against his solid chest. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating.
"He won't live to see the sunrise," Dante promised, his gaze burning with a fierce, unwavering devotion. "I am going there myself. I will rip his throat out for daring to put a target on your back."
"No," I said softly, resting my free hand against his chest.
Dante frowned, a flash of dominant, territorial instinct flaring in his eyes. "Elena, I am not letting that animal live. Not after he touched our son."
"I am not telling you to let him live, Dante," I corrected, a slow, terrifying smile curving my lips. "I am telling you that a king does not break down a door with a battering ram when his queen holds the master key."
I pulled out my encrypted smartphone, bringing up a highly classified architectural schematic.
"When I audited Carlo’s shell companies earlier today, I didn't just track the money," I explained, turning the screen so Dante could see. "I tracked the real estate. The safe house Salvatore is hiding in is registered to a subsidiary of the Moretti trust. It’s an old prohibition-era bank. It has reinforced steel doors and bulletproof glass. Your men will be slaughtered trying to breach it."
"Then how do we get in?" Dante asked, watching me with a mixture of profound awe and dark fascination.
"We don't," I whispered. "We turn off the oxygen."
I tapped a series of commands into the terminal interface I had hijacked hours ago.
"The safe house is completely automated. Smart-grid security, biometric ventilation, and digital locks. Salvatore thought technology would protect him," I said, hitting the final execute key. "I just rewrote the mainframe’s firewall. The steel doors are now permanently locked from the outside. The ventilation systems have been shut down. And I triggered the internal halon gas fire-suppression system."
Dante stared at the screen, the realization of what I had just done washing over him. The ruthless mafia Don had just witnessed a corporate consultant turn a multi-million-dollar fortress into a vacuum-sealed coffin from a penthouse in Manhattan.
"He has ten minutes of breathable air left," I said coldly, turning back to the window. "Let him suffocate in the dark."
Dante set his glass down. He wrapped his arms entirely around me, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

"You are a terrifying, magnificent creature, Elena," Dante breathed against my skin. "Remind me never to make you angry."
"Just make sure the ring you put on my finger reflects my value, Dante," I smiled into the dark. "Because I just won your war."
