Chapter 22 - The Architect's ShadowYou do not fight a ghost by searching in the dark. You flush them out with fire.

By noon, our private Gulfstream was cutting through the clouds toward Apex Biotech’s global headquarters in San Francisco. The jet’s cabin was a militarized intelligence bunker. Adrian was coordinating with a team of elite cyber-mercenaries, tracing the phantom code’s origin point.
"Thorne is routing the signal through a decentralized server farm in Monaco," Adrian reported, projecting a massive digital map onto the smart-board. "He’s heavily funded, Elara. This isn't a lone hacker operation. He has the backing of a shadow syndicate. They are holding your algorithm hostage."
My phone buzzed. It was an unlisted, heavily encrypted video link.
I looked at Adrian, then accepted the call, casting it to the main screen.
The face that appeared made my stomach churn. Dr. Aris Thorne had aged, his silver hair slicked back, his sharp, aristocratic features twisted into a smug, arrogant smile. He was sitting on the terrace of a Mediterranean villa, a glass of scotch in his hand.
"Elara, my beautiful, ruthless prodigy," Aris purred, his voice dripping with condescension. "I see you finally found my little gift in the source code."
"You are killing children, Aris," I stated, my voice echoing with absolute, freezing authority. "Turn off the phantom code, or I swear to God, I will have federal agents dragging you out of that villa by midnight."
Aris chuckled, a dry, soulless sound. "Federal agents have no jurisdiction here, darling. And if you try to shut down the global servers to purge the virus, the stock of Apex Biotech will free-fall to zero by tomorrow morning. Your board will oust you, and your empire will collapse."
"What do you want?" Adrian growled, stepping into the frame, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent.
"Ah, the fierce protector," Aris sneered. "I don't want money. I want credit. I want you to publicly announce, Elara, that the foundational architecture of Apex Biotech belongs to me. I want you to step down as CEO and transfer fifty-one percent of your voting shares to my holding company. You have forty-eight hours. If you refuse, the false negatives become permanent. Millions will die, and the blood will be entirely on your hands."
The screen went black.
I stood frozen, the magnitude of his extortion crashing over me. He wanted to strip me of everything I had built, publicly humiliate me, and steal my legacy.
"We can't negotiate with him," Adrian said softly, stepping up behind me and wrapping his strong arms around my waist. "If you give him the company, he’ll weaponize the tech."
"I know," I whispered, leaning back into his solid embrace, my mind operating with cold, architectural precision. "Aris thinks I am a politician who cares about my stock price more than my patients. He thinks I won't pull the plug."
I turned around, looking into Adrian’s fierce, devoted eyes.
"Tell Patel to initiate Protocol Phoenix," I commanded.

Adrian’s breath hitched. "Elara, if you initiate Phoenix, you are deliberately shutting down the entire Apex global network. The media will crucify you. We will lose billions in a matter of hours."
"I don't care about the billions," I said, the terrified scientist vanishing completely, replaced by the immortal queen of Silicon Valley. "Shut it down. Shut it all down. Aris can't hold the algorithm hostage if the servers don't exist. And then, get the jet fueled for Europe. We are going to Monaco."
