Chapter 6 - The Poison PillPeace in Silicon Valley is merely the deep breath an industry takes before the next knife is thrown.

For six months, I had breathed easily. Apex Biotech’s stock had surged thirty percent under my leadership. The clinical trials for our non-invasive diagnostic algorithms were blowing past FDA benchmarks. I had purged Tristan’s loyalists from the executive suite, replacing them with hungry, brilliant scientists who cared about the data, not the stock options.
I was sitting in my corner office on a rainy Tuesday morning, reviewing a new patent filing, when the heavy glass doors swung open without a knock.
Adrian, the senior board member who had stood by me during the coup, walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual relaxed, confident smile. His jaw was tight, and he carried a thick legal binder.
"Adrian," I said, setting my pen down. The familiar spike of adrenaline flooded my veins. "What’s wrong?"
"At 9:00 A.M., when the market opened, we received a cease-and-desist order from federal regulators, accompanied by an emergency injunction filed in the Southern District of New York," Adrian said, his voice a grim, low rumble. He dropped the binder onto my desk. "Someone is claiming intellectual property theft on our core diagnostic algorithm."
My blood turned to ice. "That’s impossible. I wrote the foundational code myself. Every line is documented."
"I know you did," Adrian replied, leaning his hands on my desk. "But the injunction wasn't filed by a patent troll. It was filed by Chimera Genetics."
The name hit me like a physical blow. Chimera Genetics was our largest, most ruthless competitor. Their CEO, Julian Croft, was a notorious billionaire vulture capitalist who specialized in hostile takeovers and bleeding startups dry.
"Julian Croft doesn't have our source code," I stated, my mind racing.
"He does now," Adrian said, his eyes locking onto mine with alarming intensity. "The injunction includes thirty pages of our proprietary back-end architecture. And the metadata shows that it was transferred to Chimera’s servers exactly one week before the wedding was canceled."
The room spun.
Tristan.
He hadn't just tried to steal my credit. When he realized his position at Apex was becoming unstable, he had orchestrated a dead-man’s switch. He had sold a backdoor to our biggest rival, essentially handing Julian Croft the keys to my kingdom to secure a golden parachute for himself.
"Croft just called an emergency press conference for noon," Adrian warned. "He’s going to announce that Apex is built on stolen Chimera technology. Our stock will free-fall by 1:00 P.M., and he will initiate a hostile buyout for pennies on the dollar."

I stood up, walking to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gray, rain-slicked city. Tristan thought he could reach from the grave of his ruined career and drag me down with him.
"Get our legal team in the war room," I commanded, my voice dropping to a cold, absolute zero. "Julian Croft thinks he bought a stolen company. I am going to prove he bought a ticking time bomb."
