Chapter 24 - The CheckmateThe silence in the Monte Carlo ballroom was heavier than a tombstone.

Aris Thorne, the untouchable genius of biometric hacking, staggered as if he had been physically shot. The surrounding billionaires physically backed away from him, distancing themselves from the radioactive fallout of his impending ruin.

"You insane bitch," Aris hissed venomously, his aristocratic composure completely annihilated. "You destroyed your own legacy just to spite me!"

"I protected my patients," I corrected, my voice ringing with a fierce, uncompromising fire. "Something you never understood. You viewed science as a weapon. I view it as a shield. And I will burn the entire world to ash before I let you touch my shield."

"Arrest her!" Aris screamed to his private mercenaries, his face contorted in an ugly, manic rage.

Adrian stepped forward smoothly, his towering frame instantly dominating the space. "I wouldn't do that," Adrian rumbled, his dark eyes flashing with unadulterated executioner energy.

Before the mercenaries could even draw their weapons, the heavy oak doors of the casino burst open.

A dozen heavily armed tactical agents from Interpol, coordinated by our elite intelligence team, marched directly through the crowd of horrified elites. Laser sights painted Aris and his men in a matter of seconds.

"Dr. Aris Thorne, you are under arrest for international cyber-terrorism, wire fraud, and extortion," the lead agent barked, hauling the screaming man to his feet and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"I will destroy you, Elara! I will come back!" Aris shrieked as they dragged him across the marble floor.

"You will die in a concrete box, Aris," I said softly, not even raising my voice. "Just like Tristan. Just like Julian."

As the agents dragged the ruined mastermind out of the glittering hall, the power brokers of Europe stared at me in profound, awe-struck terror. I had not just survived a global extortion attempt; I had willingly crashed a multi-billion-dollar empire just to ensure my enemy burned in the wreckage.

I calmly picked up a fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray.

"My apologies for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen," I said, offering the stunned room a radiant, devastatingly beautiful smile. "I believe this party is over."

I turned my back on the wreckage, took Adrian’s arm, and walked out into the cool, Mediterranean night.

We climbed into the back of our waiting armored Maybach. The moment the heavy doors sealed shut, the adrenaline that had fueled me for two days finally crested. I let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning my head against the soft leather seat.

Adrian reached out, pulling me across the center console and into his lap. He wrapped his strong, heavy arms around me, burying his face in the crook of my neck. He kissed my skin with a fierce, desperate, consuming devotion.

"You are a terrifying, magnificent creature, Elara," Adrian murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You burned the world to save it."

"And tomorrow, we rebuild it," I whispered, lacing my fingers through his dark hair and pulling his lips down to mine.
