Chapter 14 - The Tuscan Siege

Matteo knew he had minutes before the Italian authorities swarmed his penthouse. In a final, desperate act of vengeance, he activated a sleeper hit squad he had already stationed in the Tuscan hills.
The perimeter alarms of my estate shrieked, slicing through the quiet night.
“They breached the outer gates,” Sofia said, pulling a biometric lockbox from beneath the war room desk and retrieving a matte-black firearm.
Through the security monitors, I watched four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear storm across the vast green lawn, heading directly for the main house. They had been sent to execute the woman who was currently burning their global syndicate to the ground.
“Take Leo to the panic room,” I ordered Sofia, my voice entirely devoid of fear. “Lock the steel bulkheads. Do not open them for anyone but me.”
I didn't cower in the basement. I moved up to the ground floor, slipping into the shadows of my twelve-square-meter kitchen. I killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
The mercenaries kicked through the heavy wooden front doors, their laser sights cutting through the dark foyer. They moved slowly, expecting a terrified, helpless mother. They didn't realize they had just walked into a fatal funnel designed by a woman who anticipated every angle of attack.
As the first mercenary rounded the corner into the kitchen, I used the reflection of the moonlight against the stainless-steel cabinets to perfectly track his movement. The 304 steel wasn't just aesthetic; it was reinforced, acting as flawless ballistic cover.
I triggered the estate’s internal security countermeasures from my mobile device. Blinding, high-intensity strobe lights mounted in the ceiling violently flashed to life, accompanied by a deafening, high-frequency acoustic alarm.
The mercenaries dropped to their knees, clutching their ears, completely blinded and disoriented by the sensory overload.

Before they could recover, the wail of police sirens echoed up the long driveway. Interpol, alerted by the massive digital leak I had orchestrated, swarmed the property with heavily armed tactical units. Helicopters chopped through the night sky, their spotlights pinning the mercenaries to the floor of my home.
I stepped out from behind the indestructible steel island, lowering my weapon as the authorities breached the kitchen to arrest the blinded hitmen. The physical threat was permanently dismantled on the very floor I had built to protect my family.
