Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Two hours later, a heavily armored federal convoy transferred Sofia, Leo, and me to a highly classified, subterranean safe house in upstate New York. Dante was currently sitting in an interrogation room in Manhattan, screaming for his lawyers, entirely oblivious to the absolute magnitude of his ruin.
Sofia poured two glasses of vintage red wine in the safe house kitchen, sliding one across the steel counter to me.
“The asset freezes hit his accounts at exactly 9:00 AM,” Sofia said, her eyes gleaming with absolute victory. “Dante’s entire legitimate front—the casinos, the real estate holding companies, the shipping ports—are locked under a federal RICO injunction. He has absolutely no liquid cash to pay his lawyers or his soldiers.”
I took a slow sip of the wine, letting the warmth settle into my chest. For seven years, Dante had treated me like a fragile porcelain doll. He had kept me locked inside our sprawling penthouse, assuming that because I was quiet, I was ignorant. He thought I spent my days planning charity galas and arranging flowers.
He didn't realize that when you leave a highly intelligent woman alone in a penthouse with nothing but time, she starts paying attention to the shadows.
“Did the digital forensic team decrypt the hard drive I gave them?” I asked.
Sofia laughed out loud. “Isabella, the FBI director practically wept when he saw what you handed us. You didn't just give them a ledger. You gave them the complete, unredacted offshore routing architecture for the entire Moretti crime family. How did you even get it?”

“Dante thought his biometric safe was impenetrable,” I said softly, looking over at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully in his bassinet. “But he forgot that he programmed the safe to recognize my fingerprints on the day we got married, just in case of an emergency. He thought I was too terrified to ever open it. I’ve been copying his encrypted ledgers onto a flash drive for three years, waiting for the perfect moment.”
I didn't just leave him. I systematically dismantled the financial foundation of the most dangerous syndicate on the East Coast.
