Chapter 21 - The Ghost in the AlgorithmThe annual Autumn Gala at our Tuscan estate was nothing short of a masterpiece. Over five hundred of the world’s most influential philanthropists, tech innovators, and political reformers were gathered under a sprawling canopy of fairy lights, drinking vintage champagne and celebrating the complete eradication of the Sterling-Vanguard syndicate.

I wore a sweeping, midnight-blue Oscar de la Renta gown. Sofia stood by my side in a razor-sharp white tuxedo, her hand resting warmly on the small of my back. We were the absolute center of gravity in a room full of stars.

"To Isabella," the Prime Minister of Italy declared, raising his crystal flute from the center stage. "A woman who didn't just break the glass ceiling—她 shattered the darkest financial cartel of our century."

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. I smiled, raising my glass in return, but as I brought the rim to my lips, my Apple Watch delivered a rapid, triple-haptic vibration against my wrist.

It was the absolute zero-day alert. A custom protocol I had coded myself, designed to trigger only if the deepest, most secure vault of our private server was breached.

My blood ran instantly cold. I set my glass down on a passing waiter's tray. Sofia felt the shift in my posture immediately. Her smile remained perfectly fixed for the cameras, but her eyes darted to mine, sharp and questioning.

"What is it?" she whispered, her voice barely moving her lips.

"The core vault," I muttered, maintaining my composed exterior. "Someone just bypassed the biometric locks."

I excused myself, slipping away from the flashing cameras and the adoring crowd, moving quickly into the heavy oak-paneled study off the main hall. I locked the heavy doors behind me and pulled up the encrypted terminal on my phone.

The digital architecture I had built was flawless. It was a fortress. But right now, on my screen, I watched in real-time as millions of dollars were silently siphoned out of our global abuse-survivor fund and routed through untraceable ghost servers.

This wasn’t a brute-force hack. This was a master key.

The screen flashed black. A single line of white text slowly typed itself across my display.

Did you really think Victor was the architect, Isabella? Look in the nursery.

My heart stopped. Leo.

I dropped the phone, threw the study doors open, and sprinted down the long, vaulted hallway. "Sofia!" I screamed, abandoning all pretense of the elegant hostess. "Sofia, the nursery!"

We hit the stairs at the same time, taking them two at a bound. The elite private security team I had hired was stationed at the end of the hall, but they were slumped against the wall, unconscious. Not dead, but completely incapacitated.

I kicked the nursery door open, my hands trembling.

The room was perfectly still. The moonlight streamed through the bulletproof glass windows. And there, sitting gently in the rocking chair, holding a sleeping Leo in her arms, was a woman I had never seen before.

She wore a flawless, cream-colored cashmere coat. Her silver hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant twist. She looked up at us, her expression calm, serene, and utterly terrifying.

"He has your eyes, Isabella," the woman whispered, not waking the child. "But he has his grandfather's temper, doesn't he?"

May you like

I froze. "Who the hell are you? Put my son down."

"My name is Eleanor Sterling," she said smoothly, standing up and carefully laying Leo back into his crib. "Victor was my son. You took him from me. So, I have come to take everything from you."
