Chapter 18 - The Fortress of Steel

While I was dismantling Victor’s empire in the digital realm, he decided to accelerate the timeline in the physical world. Apex predators do not like to wait.

It was 2:00 AM. A violent, unseasonal thunderstorm was battering the Italian countryside. I was in the estate’s twelve-square-meter kitchen, pouring a cup of black coffee. The custom 304 stainless steel cabinets gleamed flawlessly in the dim light, industrial and indestructible.

Suddenly, the perimeter alarms of the estate shrieked, a high-pitched wail that cut right through the thunder.

“Sofia!” I shouted, dropping my coffee mug. It shattered against the tile, but I was already moving.

Sofia sprinted down the hallway from the residential wing, clutching a terrified, crying Leo in her arms. “The outer gates were breached!” she yelled over the alarms.

I pulled a biometric lockbox from beneath the steel kitchen island and retrieved a matte-black firearm. Through the internal security monitors, I watched six heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear and night-vision goggles storm across the lawn. They weren't Italian police. They were a private, elite extraction team hired by Victor Sterling to silence me before the twenty-four-hour deadline expired.

“Take Leo to the panic room!” I commanded Sofia, my voice entirely devoid of fear. “Lock the steel bulkheads. Do not open them for anyone but me.”

I killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

I didn't cower in the basement. I stood my ground in the kitchen. The space wasn't just designed for aesthetics; it was a tactical fatal funnel. The tempered glass doors were bullet-resistant, and the solid stainless-steel cabinets provided flawless ballistic cover.

The mercenaries kicked through the heavy wooden front doors, their laser sights cutting through the dark foyer. They moved with terrifying precision, sweeping the rooms, expecting to find a panicked, helpless socialite.

They didn't realize they had just walked into the home of a woman who had forged her spine in the fires of the underworld.

As the first two mercenaries entered the kitchen, I used the reflection of a lightning strike against the stainless-steel refrigerator to perfectly track their movements. I triggered the estate’s internal security countermeasures from my encrypted phone. Blinding, high-intensity strobe lights violently flashed to life, accompanied by a deafening, high-frequency acoustic deterrent.

The mercenaries dropped to their knees, completely blinded and disorientated.

I moved like a ghost, outflanking them in my own home. I didn't fire a single shot. I triggered the localized Halon gas suppression system I had installed in the kitchen ceiling. The dense, oxygen-depleting gas flooded the room, instantly choking the mercenaries into unconsciousness. Within sixty seconds, the physical threat to my family was permanently dismantled on the very floor I had built to protect them.
