Chapter 26: The Apex Predator

When I stepped out into the cool night air, the adrenaline was singing in my veins.
The black SUV was waiting at the curb. Daniel was standing outside, leaning against the door. He looked tense, his eyes scanning the street until he saw me emerge from the shadows.
He rushed forward, looking me up and down to make sure I was unharmed.
"Lauren," Daniel breathed, clearly astonished. "You... you walked right out. What happened in there? What did they say?"
I looked at the father of my children. I looked at the towering skyscrapers glittering against the night sky—buildings that my company financed, fueled by land that I now controlled.
"They said they are looking forward to doing business with us," I smiled softly.
Daniel stared at me for a long moment. He shook his head, a mixture of profound awe, respect, and a little bit of healthy fear shining in his eyes. He opened the door for me.
"You are absolutely terrifying," Daniel murmured, a proud smile breaking across his face.
"I have to be," I replied, stepping into the luxurious leather interior.
As the SUV drove smoothly through the city streets, heading back toward the sprawling, heavily guarded estate where my children were sleeping peacefully, I leaned my head against the glass.
I thought about the woman I used to be. The crying, broken woman who had stood in the rain, betrayed by her husband and humiliated by her mother-in-law. She felt like a stranger now. A ghost from a different lifetime.
They had tried to bury me. They had tried to strip me of my dignity, my family, and my future.
But they didn't realize that some women aren't made of fragile glass. Some women are forged in fire. And when you try to burn them, they don't turn to ash.
May you like
They turn into the sun.
I closed my eyes, listening to the quiet hum of the engine, knowing with absolute, unshakable certainty that my family's legacy was finally safe. I was the master of the board. I was the apex predator. And I would never, ever be a victim again.
