Part 5: The Boardroom Ambush

I didn't scream.
Three years ago, a threat like that would have broken me. It would have sent me spiraling into panic and tears.
But as I looked at the arrogant, cruel woman standing in my living room, I didn't feel fear. I felt a cold, absolute, and terrifying rage.
"Get out of my house," I said.
"Lauren, be reasonable—"
"I said get out!" I commanded, my voice echoing off the walls with an authority that actually made one of her lawyers flinch. "You don't know who you are dealing with anymore, Eleanor. You will not touch my children."
Eleanor scoffed, adjusting her coat.
"We will see you in court, little girl. Enjoy your last few weeks with them."
The moment the door clicked shut, I didn't cry. I picked up my phone. I didn't call a lawyer. I called the one person who needed to handle this before I burned his family’s empire to the ground.
Daniel.
The next morning, the towering glass skyscraper of the family enterprise was buzzing with the energy of the annual shareholder meeting. Eleanor was seated at the head of the massive mahogany table in the executive boardroom, holding court, completely oblivious to the storm that was about to hit.
I didn't wait for the receptionist to announce me.
I bypassed security with the absolute confidence of a woman who had nothing left to lose. I pushed open the heavy glass doors of the boardroom right in the middle of Eleanor’s speech.
The entire room of twenty wealthy executives went dead silent.
Eleanor’s face contorted with immediate, burning outrage.
"What is the meaning of this?!" she screeched, slamming her hand on the table. "Security! Remove this woman immediately! How did she even get in here?"
Two large security guards rushed into the room, reaching for my arms.
"Don't touch her."
The voice cut through the chaos like a heavy steel blade.
Everyone froze.
Daniel stood up from his seat at the opposite end of the table. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying fury. He wasn't looking at me. He was looking directly at his mother.
He slowly walked around the table, placing himself firmly between me and the guards.
"Daniel, have you lost your mind?" Eleanor demanded, her voice shrill. "She is trespassing! She is an unstable woman trying to extort this family!"
"The only person extorting this family is you, Mother," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out the exact same leather folder Eleanor had tried to hand me yesterday. He tossed it onto the center of the mahogany table. It hit the wood with a heavy, final thud.
"Did you really think you could threaten the mother of my children behind my back?" Daniel asked, his eyes narrowing into dark, lethal slits. "Did you really believe I would let you use the wealth I built to terrorize my family?"
