Chapter 33: The Ghost in the Machine

Ten minutes later, the underground war room of the estate was buzzing with the best cybersecurity experts money could buy. Dozens of analysts were frantically typing, trying to trace the origin of the absolute blackout.
I stood at the head of the command table, staring at the massive digital monitor on the wall.
"Talk to me," I commanded, my voice perfectly steady despite the fact that billions of dollars were currently hanging by a thread.
"We traced the routing origin, Ma'am," the lead cyber-analyst said, wiping sweat from his brow. "It’s coming from a ghost server. The signature... it belongs to Silas Thorne."
Daniel’s head snapped up. "Silas Thorne? That’s impossible. He’s a myth."
"Who is Silas Thorne?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.
"He is the grim reaper of Silicon Valley," Daniel explained, his voice hushed. "He doesn't exist on paper. He operates a dark-web syndicate that steals corporate data and blackmails global superpowers. Governments hire him to crash economies. He doesn't want money, Lauren. He wants control."
Suddenly, the massive screen on the wall flickered.
The security feeds vanished. In their place, a live video feed appeared.
Sitting in a dark, minimalist room illuminated only by the glow of computer monitors, was a pale, young man with sharp features and a cold, empty smile.
"Good morning, Ms. Parker," Silas Thorne’s voice echoed through the war room speakers. It was unnervingly calm. "I hope I didn't ruin your Sunday coffee."
I stepped forward, crossing my arms, looking directly into the camera lens so he could see my absolute lack of fear.
"You have exactly one hour to release my servers, Silas," I said smoothly. "Before I find out what cave you are hiding in and bury you inside it."
Silas laughed—a dry, mechanical sound.
"I don't hide in caves, Lauren. I hide in the code. And right now, I own your entire life. I have frozen your assets. I have locked your bank accounts. I even have the codes to the smart-locks on your estate gates."

He leaned closer to the camera.
"You took down the Old Guard through brute financial force," Silas mocked. "But money is just paper. Information is the true currency of the world. And tomorrow morning, I am going to release a fabricated, highly-classified digital dossier proving that your foundation is a front for international arms dealing. The FBI will seize your children’s trust, and you will be erased."
