Chapter 28: The Poisoned Apple

The meeting took place at a private, underground cigar lounge that Alexander had rented out entirely for himself.
I listened to the entire interaction in real-time through a micro-transmitter hidden in Daniel’s watch, sitting safely in my penthouse war room with Marcus and Vance.
"Daniel," Alexander’s smooth, cultured voice echoed through the earpiece. "It is a tragedy to see what you have become. The heir to a legacy, reduced to fetching coffee for your ex-wife."
I heard the sound of ice clinking in a crystal glass.
"I manage the operations," Daniel replied, his tone perfectly even. "Lauren manages the vision."
Alexander laughed—a cruel, sharp sound. "She stole your company, Daniel. She humiliated your mother. She castrated you in front of the entire city. And you just stand there, smiling like a good little lapdog."
"What do you want, Alexander?" Daniel asked coldly.
"I want to offer you your dignity back," Alexander purred. "I have amassed a massive holding of European proxy shares. Enough to bypass Lauren’s security protocols if I have a boardroom sponsor. Tomorrow, at the quarterly meeting, you are going to sponsor a vote of no confidence. You will hand the board over to me."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then I will launch a coordinated short-selling attack on the Leo & Mia Foundation," Alexander threatened casually. "I will frame her charities for international money laundering. I will ensure the federal government freezes all her assets, and your children will grow up visiting their mother in a federal penitentiary."
Alexander paused, letting the poison sink in.
"But if you help me overthrow her," Alexander continued, "I will give you back fifty percent of the company. You can be a king again, Daniel. All you have to do is turn the key."
In the war room, Marcus looked at me, visibly sweating. "Lauren... if he has European proxy shares, he could actually trigger a hostile board vote."
I didn't answer. I just tapped the earpiece.

"I'll do it," Daniel’s voice came through, sounding convincingly defeated. "I’ll sponsor the vote tomorrow."
Alexander chuckled. "Good boy."
