Chapter 32: The Invisible Threat

Absolute power is a beautiful, terrifying thing. But the higher you build your fortress, the more appealing it becomes to those who live in the shadows.

It was a quiet Sunday morning. The financial markets were closed, the city was resting, and the Leo & Mia Foundation had just successfully wired five hundred million dollars to construct a network of children's hospitals across South America.

I was in the estate’s sunroom, drinking coffee and reading a novel, when the heavy oak doors violently burst open.

Marcus, my lead attorney, and Vance, my head of security, rushed into the room. They didn't look angry. They looked genuinely terrified.

"Lauren," Marcus breathed, his tie undone and his face pale. "We have a catastrophic breach."

I set down my coffee cup. "Physical or digital?"

"Digital," Vance answered, his voice tight. "Ten minutes ago, the mainframe for the Harrington-Parker global trust was completely locked down. We have lost administrative access to every single corporate account, the foundation's charitable funds, and your private equity portfolios."

I stood up, the peace of the morning instantly evaporating into thin air. "Who locked us out?"

"We don't know," Marcus stammered, pulling open his encrypted tablet. "It’s not a standard ransomware attack. They aren't asking for Bitcoin. They bypassed military-grade firewalls in less than sixty seconds. Whoever did this holds the digital keys to your entire empire."

Daniel ran into the sunroom a second later, holding his own phone.

"Lauren," Daniel said, his eyes wide. "Look at this."

He turned the screen toward me. It was a live feed of the global stock exchange monitors. Across every major financial news network, the scrolling tickers had stopped. They had been replaced by a single, bold line of text flashing in neon white against a black screen:

THE QUEEN HAS BEEN DETHRONED. CHECKMATE IN 24 HOURS.
