Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Flatline

“What did you just say?”
Daniel Mercer’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a sharp, terrifying edge that cut through the sterile, chaotic noise of the maternity ward hallway. He stared at Vanessa Hale as if the beautiful, perfectly styled woman he had been sleeping with for the past eight months had suddenly peeled off a human mask to reveal a monster underneath.
Vanessa’s smile faltered, but her eyes remained cold and calculating. She reached out, attempting to smooth the lapel of his wrinkled dress shirt. “Daniel, be rational. You’ve been miserable for years. Claire’s pregnancy has been a nightmare for your stress levels, your business, your freedom. If she doesn’t make it... it’s a tragedy, yes. But it’s also a clean slate for us.”
Daniel physically recoiled, knocking her manicured hand away.
Through the narrow rectangular glass of the delivery room door, the horrifying scene continued to unfold. The continuous, shrill tone of the heart monitor was a sound that would haunt Daniel for the rest of his life. Flatline. His wife, the woman who had stood by him when he had nothing, the woman currently carrying his unborn children, was dead on a table while a doctor frantically pumped her chest.
And the woman standing next to him had laughed.
The suffocating guilt and sudden, blinding clarity hit Daniel like a physical blow to the stomach. He had spent the last eight months justifying his affair. He had convinced himself that Vanessa was a breath of fresh air, a sophisticated, low-maintenance escape from the terrifying realities of high-risk pregnancies and impending fatherhood. In that sickening moment, looking at Vanessa’s expectant, greedy eyes, Daniel realized he hadn't found an escape. He had tethered himself to a sociopath.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the delivery suite crashed open.
A team of nurses sprinted out, wheeling two tiny, plastic incubators toward the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Inside them were two fragile, beautiful infants. His twins. Before Daniel could even take a step toward them, Dr. Elena Brooks stepped out of the room. Her surgical scrubs were completely soaked in Claire’s blood. She pulled down her surgical mask, her chest heaving with exhaustion.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward, playing the role of the concerned companion. “Doctor, is it over? Did she pass?”
Dr. Brooks ignored Vanessa entirely. Her piercing, furious eyes locked onto Daniel.
“Your wife is alive, Daniel,” Dr. Brooks said, her voice dripping with absolute, unbridled contempt. “We shocked her heart back into rhythm. We stopped the hemorrhaging. She is critical, but she is a fighter, and she is going to survive.”
Daniel let out a loud, shattering sob of relief, dropping his face into his hands. “Thank God. Can I see her? Please, let me see her.”
“No, you cannot,” Dr. Brooks snapped, stepping squarely into his path. She reached into the deep pocket of her scrubs and pulled out a folded, blood-smudged legal document. “Because twenty minutes before Claire coded, while she was bleeding out and watching you flirt with your mistress through that window, she asked me for a pen. She executed an emergency, irrevocable medical and legal proxy. She has barred you from her room, barred you from the NICU, and transferred all rights to her father, who is currently stepping off a private jet with his legal team.”

Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms. “You can’t legally enforce that. He is her husband.”
Dr. Brooks finally turned her lethal gaze to Vanessa. “And you are the junior marketing director at Mercer Holdings. Which makes what I am about to say even more satisfying. Claire’s father didn't just bring his lawyers, Daniel. He brought the board of directors. You don't get to see your wife. You don't get to see your children. Security is on their way to escort you both off the premises. I suggest you run.”
