Chapter 13 - The Bait and the TrapWe didn't just need to stop Victor Sterling; we needed to catch him red-handed. If we merely blocked his attacks, he would slink back into the shadows and wait for another opportunity to strike at my family. We needed to lure him out into the open and force him to expose his entire illegal network.

To do that, I had to play the one role I had sworn I would never play again: the helpless victim.
Julian coordinated a high-level, completely off-the-books meeting with Special Agent Harris, a top cyber-crimes investigator at the FBI who had been tracking Victor’s underground data brokerages for years without success.
"Victor operates through five layers of encrypted proxies," Agent Harris explained, projecting a complex digital map onto the wall of my office. "Even if we trace the Facebook VIA clones or the rejected web traffic, it just leads to dead-end servers in Eastern Europe. To arrest him, we need to trace a direct, massive data packet right to the server farm located inside his personal compound. But he only connects to that mainframe when he’s manually directing a massive, high-bandwidth attack."
"So, we give him a target he can't resist," I said, my mind racing with a dangerous plan. "Tomorrow night is the global launch of Aria, our virtual fashion KOC. We are projecting over three million concurrent viewers on our live stream across all platforms."
"If we shut down our firewall protections for exactly sixty seconds during the peak of the broadcast," Julian continued, catching my drift, "Victor will see the opening. He won't be able to resist the urge to flood the stream with his malicious traffic and crash the event live in front of the entire world."
"And when he pushes that amount of dirty traffic," Agent Harris smiled grimly, "it will require so much bandwidth that he’ll have to route it through his personal mainframe. We can trace the IP, secure the warrant, and raid his compound in real-time."
It was an incredible risk. If the FBI couldn't trace the ping fast enough, or if Julian couldn't pull our firewalls back up in time, Victor’s toxic traffic would completely obliterate our social media infrastructure. Aria would be permanently banned by the algorithms, our stock would tank, and Mercer Holdings would suffer a catastrophic blow.
But as I looked at the photograph of my children hidden safely away with a private security detail, I knew there was no other option.
The night of the launch, the atmosphere inside the Mercer Holdings broadcast control room was electric. Dozens of technicians sat at glowing monitors, monitoring the global feeds. I stood at the center console, wearing a stunning, structured white blazer, my hands resting on the edge of the desk. Julian stood right beside me, a headset pressed to his ear, in direct communication with the FBI raid team stationed two miles away from Victor’s compound.
"Five minutes to broadcast," the lead producer called out.
The screens ahead of us showed millions of users pouring into the waiting rooms on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. The fashion world was holding its breath, waiting to see the future of AI influencers.
"Are you ready for this?" Julian asked softly, taking my hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"I survived Daniel. I survived poverty. I survived childbirth alone," I said, my voice steady and fierce. "Victor Sterling is just another bully hiding behind a keyboard. Let’s open the gates."
"Broadcast goes live in three... two... one!"
On the massive screens, the sleek, breathtakingly realistic digital avatar of Aria stepped onto a virtual runway. The graphics were flawless, moving with human grace. The chat columns instantly exploded with millions of comments from stunned viewers.
"Julian," I commanded, my heart pounding in my throat. "Drop the firewalls."
Julian typed a rapid sequence of commands into his terminal and hit enter. "Firewalls are down. We are completely exposed."
For ten agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The stream continued flawlessly.
Then, the attack hit us like a digital tsunami.
"Incoming!" a technician screamed. "We are being flooded! Hundreds of thousands of clone accounts are spamming the chat with banned URLs! Incoming traffic from rejected domains is spiking by four thousand percent! The platforms are issuing automated warnings!"
"Hold the line!" I shouted, watching the stream buffer and pixelate as the malicious data choked our bandwidth.
"Agent Harris, do you have the trace?" Julian yelled into his headset.
"We need ten more seconds!" the agent’s voice crackled over the radio.
The screen flashed a massive red warning: ACCOUNT AT RISK OF SUSPENSION DUE TO POLICY VIOLATIONS.
"Julian, we’re going to lose the accounts!" Chloe cried out, her hands hovering over the emergency kill switch.
"Five seconds!" Julian ordered.
The stream froze entirely. The digital runway dissolved into static. My heart stopped. Had I just gambled my entire empire and lost?
"Got him!" Agent Harris shouted over the comms. "Direct ping traced to Victor’s personal mainframe! We have the IP! The raid team is breaching the compound right now!"
"Julian, put the walls back up!" I screamed.
Julian slammed his hand onto the enter key. The heavy, military-grade firewalls slammed back into place, severing Victor’s connection and instantly blocking the millions of malicious bots and toxic traffic.
For a terrifying moment, the screens remained black. The entire room held its breath.
Then, the buffering circle spun, and Aria’s stunning digital face reappeared on the screen, continuing her walk down the runway flawlessly.

The control room erupted into deafening cheers. Chloe burst into tears of relief. I slumped against the console, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three days. Julian pulled me into a fierce, triumphant embrace, lifting my feet entirely off the floor.
"We got him, Emily," Julian laughed, kissing me passionately amidst the cheers. "The FBI just confirmed. Victor is in handcuffs. The shadow empire is gone."
