Chapter 16 - The Permanent LockFour months after our breathtaking wedding on the raw concrete foundation, that very same bedrock had transformed into an architectural masterpiece. Our custom two-story estate, distinguished by its sweeping, modern Japanese-style hipped roof, was finally taking shape against the vast Texas skyline. The structural framing was complete, the drywall was up, and we were officially in the finishing stages.

I stood in the exact center of what would soon be the heart of our home. I had obsessed over these blueprints for endless nights, ensuring the kitchen was exactly twelve square meters—precisely 4.3 meters long by 2.8 meters wide. It was an intimate but incredibly functional space. I had relentlessly researched materials, eventually rejecting standard imported MDF and basic polymer boards. Instead, I specifically ordered custom 304 stainless steel cabinets with sleek, tempered glass doors. I wanted a space that was not only beautiful but indestructible. I wanted a kitchen that would never warp, never crack, and never rot.
"The contractors said the stainless steel cabinetry will be delivered on Tuesday," Julian’s deep, comforting voice echoed through the empty room. He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. "You were right, Emily. The dimensions are perfect. It’s going to be a chef's dream."
I leaned back into his solid chest, breathing in the scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the faint smell of fresh sawdust. "It has to be perfect, Julian. This is where Leo and Maya are going to eat their breakfast before school. This is where we are going to celebrate every anniversary. I want the foundation of their memories to be flawless."
Julian kissed the side of my neck, sending a familiar, electric thrill down my spine. Life had become a portrait of absolute perfection. Mercer Holdings was grossing billions, our virtual KOC, Aria, was the face of high-end digital fashion, and Daniel was a distant, locked-away nightmare.
But in the world of high-stakes business, perfection is just a target painted on your back.
My phone, resting on the makeshift plywood counter, began to vibrate violently. The caller ID flashed Chloe’s name. It was Sunday afternoon—Chloe never called on Sundays unless the building was on fire.
"Chloe?" I answered, my CEO instincts instantly overriding my relaxed state.
"Emily, you need to get to the office right now," Chloe’s voice was completely breathless, laced with a raw, unfiltered panic that made my blood run cold. "It’s the Meta Business Manager. We’ve been taken down."
"Taken down?" I frowned, exchanging a sharp glance with Julian. "You mean a temporary suspension? Did the algorithm misflag one of Aria's new ad creatives again? Just submit an appeal to the manual review board."
"No, Emily, you don't understand," Chloe practically sobbed into the receiver. "It’s not a suspension. It’s a permanent lock. The entire corporate Meta account for Mercer Holdings, including Aria’s Instagram, Facebook pages, and our global ad accounts. They are entirely disabled. There is a massive red banner across the dashboard. It says Permanent Account Review Restriction. There is no appeal button. There is no customer support chat. We are completely, entirely wiped off the platform."
My heart stopped. A permanent lock without an appeal option was the digital equivalent of a death sentence. It meant that someone at the highest levels of Meta’s compliance division had manually intervened to terminate our digital existence. Millions of dollars in ad revenue, our direct line to our consumers, and Aria’s entire virtual universe—erased in a single second.

"Call the legal team," Julian ordered, having heard every word through the speaker. His jaw was clenched, his eyes dark with immediate, protective fury. "Tell them to draft an emergency federal injunction against Meta. We will be at the headquarters in twenty minutes."
As we sprinted to the SUV, leaving our beautiful, quiet home behind, a chilling realization washed over me. Daniel and Victor were gone, but the power vacuum they left behind had attracted a new kind of predator. Someone was trying to suffocate my empire in the dark, and they were using the very platforms I relied on as their weapon.
