Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Slaughter

Six weeks later, I walked out of the hospital for the first time, my precious, healthy twins sleeping soundly in their carriers, guarded by a detail of private security. I had spent every waking moment in the NICU, watching them grow, fighting through the physical trauma of the surgery, and meticulously plotting the final stroke of my revenge.
I did not go back to the sprawling suburban mansion I had shared with Daniel. I moved directly into a highly secured, beautiful penthouse overlooking the city, purchased entirely in my name.
When the time finally came for the official divorce mediation, I did not send my lawyers to handle it. I wanted to look the monster in the eye.
I walked into the sterile, cold conference room of Julian’s law firm wearing a sharply tailored, emerald-green suit. I looked nothing like the exhausted, terrified pregnant woman Daniel had left to die. I looked like a queen coming to claim her throne.
Daniel sat across the heavy wooden table, flanked by a discount public defender. He had aged ten years in six weeks. His expensive suits hung loosely on his shrinking frame, his face gaunt, his eyes hollow and haunted. When I walked into the room, he couldn't even look at me. He stared down at his trembling hands.
His lawyer attempted a weak, pathetic opening maneuver. “My client is prepared to offer an uncontested divorce. However, given his sudden unemployment and the freezing of his assets, he is requesting temporary spousal support and supervised visitation with the children.”
Julian actually laughed out loud. It was a sharp, biting sound that made Daniel flinch.
“Counselor, you must be joking,” Julian said, dropping a thick legal binder onto the table. “This is the finalized forensic audit. It details over a quarter of a million dollars in corporate embezzlement. We have already handed copies to the District Attorney. If you attempt to ask for a single dime of my client's money, or if you ever attempt to petition a family court for visitation rights, I will personally ensure Daniel faces federal prison time for wire fraud.”
Daniel looked up, tears of pure, unadulterated terror spilling over his eyelashes. “Claire, please,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “I have nothing. I’m living in a motel. I haven't even seen their faces. Please, they are my children.”
I leaned forward, folding my hands on the glass table. The air in the room grew ice-cold.
“You do not have children, Daniel,” I said, my voice steady, uncompromising, and lethal. “You had a choice. While I was bleeding to death, while the monitors were screaming, you stood in a hallway and chose a woman who laughed at my execution. You made your choice. Now, you get to live with it.”
I slid a single piece of paper across the table.
“You will sign this absolute waiver of all marital assets,” I demanded. “You will sign an irrevocable relinquishment of all parental rights. You will walk away with exactly what you brought into this marriage: nothing. If you sign this today, I will withhold the criminal charges, and you can keep your freedom. If you hesitate for even one second, Julian makes the call, and you go to prison.”

Daniel looked at the paper. He looked at the discount lawyer, who simply nodded in grim defeat.
With a shaking hand, sobbing openly, Daniel picked up the pen and signed his name, officially erasing himself from my life and the lives of my children forever.
