Chapter 7 - The Uninvited GuestTwo days passed with no sign of Daniel. I refused to cancel the annual Mercer Holdings Philanthropy Gala. It was the crowning event of my career, a night where the state’s wealthiest donors gathered to fund emergency maternal wards—a cause born directly from my own trauma. Canceling it would signal fear, and I refused to let Daniel think he had power over me.

The ballroom of the downtown Plaza Hotel was transformed into a vision of gold and crystal. Waiters carried trays of champagne, and a jazz quartet played softly in the corner. I stood at the center of the room, wearing a stunning, backless crimson gown that demanded attention, a visual representation of my survival and dominance. Julian stood faithfully by my side, looking devastatingly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo, his eyes scanning the crowd with the vigilance of a hawk.
The twins were safely back at the estate, guarded by Thomas and a private security detail of ex-military contractors. I had checked the cameras on my phone a dozen times; Leo and Maya were fast asleep in their cribs, perfectly safe.
As the evening progressed, I took the stage to give my keynote speech. The crowd of five hundred elites fell silent, hanging on my every word as I spoke about the resilience of mothers, about facing death and choosing life. The applause that followed was deafening.
But as I stepped down from the podium, the heavy, crystal chandeliers above us suddenly flickered. A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom as the main lights died entirely, plunging the room into shadows illuminated only by the emergency exit signs and the flicker of decorative candles.
“Julian,” I whispered, instantly reaching for him.
His hand found mine in the dark, gripping it tightly. “Stay behind me. Security is already moving.”
The doors to the kitchen service hallway slammed open. A silhouette stepped into the dim light of the candles.
It was Daniel.
But he looked nothing like the polished, arrogant CEO he once was. His suit was oversized and disheveled, his face unshaven and gaunt. His eyes were wide, manic, and reflecting the candlelight with a terrifying intensity.
“Emily!” Daniel’s voice boomed across the silent, shocked ballroom. It was a guttural, desperate sound. Guests scrambled out of his way as he marched toward the center of the floor.
Julian stepped in front of me, shielding me completely with his body. “Daniel,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low octave. “Take one more step toward her, and I will break your legs in front of this entire room.”
Daniel stopped, a twisted, ugly sneer spreading across his face. “Julian. The parasitic lawyer who slept his way into my company. You think you’re a hero? You’re just playing house with my leftovers.”
The collective gasp from the high-society crowd was audible. I stepped out from behind Julian, my crimson dress sweeping across the floor. I held my head high, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch.
“You are pathetic, Daniel,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension like a razor blade. “You crashed a charity gala because you have nothing left. You are bankrupt, you are alone, and you are entirely irrelevant to my life.”
“Irrelevant?” Daniel barked a harsh, unhinged laugh. He pulled a thick, manila envelope from inside his jacket and threw it onto the floor at my feet. “You think you can erase me, Emily? You think you can just keep my children? My blood?”
“They are my children!” I shot back, my composure cracking just a fraction as the maternal instinct roared to life. “You watched me code on a heart monitor while you were booking a luxury vacation with Vanessa! You abandoned them before they took their first breath!”
“And now I want them back,” Daniel hissed, his eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying certainty. “I don't care about the company anymore. I don't care about the money. I’m going to take the only things you actually love, Emily. I’m going to watch you suffer.”
Before Julian could move, six armed hotel security guards tackled Daniel to the floor. He didn't fight them. He just laid on the marble tiles, laughing hysterically as they pinned his arms behind his back.
“Read the envelope, Emily!” Daniel screamed as they dragged him toward the exit. “Read the envelope! The law doesn't care about your feelings! I’m their father! You can't stop what’s coming!”
The doors slammed shut behind him. The lights suddenly flickered back on, flooding the room in bright, harsh reality.
Julian immediately picked up the envelope from the floor. He tore it open, pulling out a stack of legal documents stamped with the official seal of the state family court. As Julian’s eyes scanned the pages, all the color drained from his face.
“Julian,” I asked, my voice trembling. “What is it?”
He looked up at me, absolute horror in his eyes. “It’s a court-ordered emergency custody injunction. Emily… Daniel didn't come here to attack you. He came here as a distraction. He signed an affidavit claiming you suffer from severe postpartum psychosis and are a danger to the children.”
My heart stopped. “That’s insane. No judge would sign that without medical proof.”
“He has proof,” Julian whispered, showing me the final page. It was a certified psychiatric evaluation, detailing severe mental instability, hallucinations, and violent tendencies.
And at the bottom of the page, it was signed by Dr. Robert Evans—the exact same doctor who had delivered my twins on the night I almost died.
“Julian,” I breathed, the blood turning to ice in my veins. “The estate. The children.”
May you like
Julian was already dialing his phone, running toward the exit. “Thomas! Lockdown the estate! Do not let anyone through the gates!”
But over the receiver, I could hear the devastating sound of police sirens wailing in the background of Thomas’s radio. We were already too late.
