Chapter 9 - The Devil's BargainWe didn't sleep. Julian spent the entire night utilizing every contact in his vast legal network. By 6:00 AM, we had tracked down Vanessa. Following her spectacular fall from grace, the former marketing executive was living in a run-down, aluminum-sided trailer park on the outskirts of a dying industrial town, three hours away.

I didn't bother changing out of the clothes I had worn to the gala. I threw a heavy cashmere trench coat over my ruined crimson gown, tied my messy hair into a knot, and got into the passenger seat of Julian’s SUV.
When we pulled into the muddy driveway of Lot 42, the contrast between Vanessa’s old life and her current reality was jarring. The yard was littered with cheap plastic chairs and empty beer cans.
Julian knocked hard on the aluminum door. A minute later, it creaked open.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, wearing a stained bathrobe, her roots heavily grown out, dark circles framing her hollow eyes. When she saw me standing there, her jaw dropped in absolute shock.
“Emily?” she gasped, instinctively pulling her robe tighter. “What… what are you doing here? If Daniel sent you to gloat—”
“Daniel didn't send me,” I interrupted, pushing past her and stepping into the cramped, stale-smelling trailer. Julian followed close behind, locking the door. “Daniel is busy orchestrating the kidnapping of my children using a forged psychiatric evaluation.”
Vanessa froze, her eyes darting between Julian and me. “I don't know what you’re talking about.”
“Don't lie to me, Vanessa,” I snapped, stepping into her personal space. My voice was lethal, cold, and calculated. “Daniel is bankrupt. He doesn't have the cash to bribe a prominent obstetrician like Dr. Evans to commit felony perjury. But you do. You still have the offshore account Daniel set up for you before the divorce. The one I couldn't touch during the asset division.”
Vanessa’s face paled. She backed up until she hit the cheap formica counter of her kitchen.
“I didn't pay for that!” Vanessa cried out, panic rising in her voice. “I swear to you, Emily! Daniel came to me a month ago. He begged me for the money. He said he had a foolproof plan to get the twins, sue you for child support, and we could go back to the way things were! He said he was going to buy Dr. Evans’s silence.”
“And you gave it to him,” Julian stated, his voice heavy with disgust.
“He manipulated me!” Vanessa sobbed, sliding down against the counter. “He took the last two hundred thousand dollars I had. And then… as soon as the transfer cleared, he vanished. He blocked my number. He took my money and left me here in this hellhole to rot! He used me, Emily. Just like he used you.”
I looked down at the woman who had once been my greatest tormentor. I felt no pity, only a ruthless, calculating pragmatism.
“He has an emergency custody hearing today at 2:00 PM,” I said, pulling a blank checkbook from my coat pocket. I grabbed a pen from her counter, signed my name at the bottom of a check, and threw it onto the floor at her feet. “That check is blank. It’s tied to my personal corporate account. It will clear up to five million dollars.”
Vanessa stared at the check as if it were glowing. She slowly looked up at me, her eyes wide with desperate disbelief. “Why are you giving me this?”
“Because you are going to get into my car right now,” I ordered, my eyes locking onto hers with absolute authority. “You are going to walk into that courtroom. You are going to testify under oath that Daniel extorted that money from you to bribe Dr. Evans. You are going to hand over the wire transfer receipts to Julian. You are going to help me bury Daniel Mercer so deep he never sees the light of day again.”
Vanessa hesitated, trembling. “If I confess to funding it… I could go to jail.”
“If you help us,” Julian interjected smoothly, the brilliant lawyer taking over, “I will personally negotiate a blanket immunity deal with the District Attorney in exchange for your cooperation as a star witness. You walk away clean, and you walk away rich. Or, you stay here, and when we inevitably subpoena your bank records, you go to federal prison for conspiracy to commit fraud and child endangerment. Choose, Vanessa.”

Vanessa looked around her depressing, cramped trailer. She looked at the blank check on the floor.
She bent down, picked up the check with shaking hands, and stood up straight. “Let me get my coat.”
