Chapter 3 - The Cold Pavement of Reality

The reality of Daniel’s catastrophic mistake did not set in immediately. For the first twenty-four hours after being humiliatingly escorted out of the hospital, he operated in a state of frantic, aggressive delusion.
He had driven Vanessa back to her luxury apartment, pacing her living room and making furious phone calls to his own lawyers, demanding they override the medical proxy. But every lawyer he called gave him the same grim news: Claire’s documents were iron-clad, legally witnessed by the chief of medicine, and backed by the terrifying, limitless wealth of the Bennett family.
By Monday morning, the true bloodbath began.
Daniel walked into the sprawling, glass-walled executive suite of Mercer Holdings, expecting to take control of his company and leverage his corporate lawyers against my father. Instead, he found the executive boardroom completely packed with the board of directors, internal compliance auditors, and Julian Vance.
“What the hell is going on here?” Daniel demanded, his arrogant bravado masking his rising panic.
Julian Vance stood at the head of the mahogany table, adjusting his bespoke suit jacket. “Take a seat, Daniel. We were just discussing your immediate termination.”
Daniel laughed, a harsh, incredulous sound. “My termination? I am the CEO and the founder of this company. You can’t fire me.”
“You are the CEO on paper,” Julian corrected him smoothly, sliding a massive, four-inch-thick forensic audit file across the table. “But as you well know, sixty-five percent of the voting shares are held in a blind trust controlled entirely by your wife. A wife who has just officially invoked the criminal fraud and morality clauses in your operating agreement.”
The blood drained from Daniel’s face. “Fraud? What fraud?”
“The two hundred and fifty thousand dollars of corporate marketing funds you embezzled to pay for Vanessa Hale’s luxury apartment, her designer coats, and your frequent, undocumented 'business trips' to high-end resorts,” Julian listed off, his voice echoing in the silent boardroom. “You didn't just cheat on your wife, Daniel. You stole from your own investors. Your corporate access is permanently revoked. Your accounts are frozen pending a federal investigation. Security is waiting in the hall.”
Daniel staggered backward, bumping into the wall. He couldn't breathe. The empire he had built, the arrogant invincibility he had paraded around for years, evaporated in exactly three minutes.
Desperate and terrified, Daniel rushed to Vanessa’s apartment. He needed her. He needed the woman who had promised him a "clean slate" and a life free of stress. He burst through her door, rambling frantically about the frozen accounts, the board, the impending federal audit.
Vanessa stood in the center of her living room, her arms crossed, wearing the exact same cream-colored coat she had worn at the hospital.
She did not rush to comfort him. She did not offer him a drink. She looked at him with absolute, icy disgust.
“You lost the company?” Vanessa asked, her voice shrill and panicked.
“Claire’s father orchestrated a hostile takeover. They froze everything, Vanessa. But it’s going to be okay. We can fight this. I just need to use your accounts to secure a defense attorney until—”
“My accounts?” Vanessa interrupted, letting out a cruel, mocking laugh. “Are you out of your mind? I’m not paying for your legal defense, Daniel! I didn't sign up to play nursemaid to a broke, unemployed felon!”
“Vanessa, please! I gave up my family for you!” Daniel begged, reaching for her.

She swatted his hand away like a diseased insect. “You didn't give them up, Daniel. You lost them because you're a sloppy, arrogant fool. And now you’ve lost me. Get out of my apartment before I call the police.”
Daniel stood on the cold pavement outside her building, entirely alone, completely broke, and finally suffocating under the devastating weight of his own actions.
