Chapter 12 - The Phantom Saboteur

Julian had practically moved into my office. He sat at the far end of the couch, his tie loosened, an empty espresso cup on the table, as his fingers flew across his laptop keyboard.
"They’re using decentralized bot farms," Julian said, his voice grave. "This isn't a couple of angry internet trolls, Emily. This is a highly funded, military-grade corporate sabotage operation. Whoever is paying for these clone accounts and buying this rejected traffic is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a day just to keep us offline."
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering city skyline. Aria, our virtual fashion KOC, was supposed to debut in three days at a massive, live-streamed gala attended by the biggest names in the global fashion industry. If our social media platforms were banned, the launch would be a catastrophic, humiliating failure. Investors would pull out, and the stock price of Mercer Holdings would plummet.
"Who has that kind of money and hates me enough to burn their own cash just to see me fail?" I asked, crossing my arms defensively. Daniel was rotting in federal prison, entirely cut off from the outside world. Eleanor Vance was locked in a maximum-security facility.
Before Julian could answer, the secure line on my desk phone rang. It was the front desk of the Mercer Holdings lobby.
"Ms. Mercer," the security chief said, his voice tense. "There is a woman down here demanding to see you. She’s extremely agitated and refuses to leave. It’s Vanessa Sterling."
Julian and I exchanged a sharp look. Vanessa had been the star witness who helped put Daniel in prison. She had fled the city months ago to start over. Why was she back?
"Send her up," I commanded.
Five minutes later, the elevator doors chimed, and Vanessa stumbled into my office. She looked nothing like the polished, arrogant socialite she used to be. She was pale, terrified, and clutching a battered leather tote bag to her chest like a shield.
"Vanessa," Julian said calmly, standing up. "What are you doing here?"
"They found me," Vanessa gasped, tears immediately spilling down her cheeks. "Emily, I am so sorry. I didn't know where else to go. He’s going to kill me."
I walked over to her, guiding her to a plush chair. "Who is going to kill you? Calm down and tell me what’s happening."
Vanessa took a trembling breath. "When Daniel was building his fake empire, before Eleanor... he borrowed money from someone else. Dark money. A shadow investor who operates illegal server farms and underground data brokerages. I knew about it, but I never said anything during the trial because I was terrified of him."
"Who is it?" Julian demanded, his lawyer instincts flaring.
"His name is Victor Sterling," Vanessa whispered, looking at the door as if expecting it to burst open. "He’s my estranged uncle. He’s a tech billionaire, but all his money is dirty. He was using Daniel’s companies to launder his cash. When you took Daniel down and exposed the shell companies, you cost Victor over fifty million dollars."
The missing piece of the puzzle violently snapped into place.
"Victor is the one buying the Facebook clone accounts," I said, the realization washing over me like ice water. "He’s the one buying the rejected, malicious traffic and funneling it into our servers. He’s trying to destroy Mercer Holdings in retaliation."
"He doesn't just want to destroy your company, Emily," Vanessa sobbed, pulling a crumpled, threatening photograph from her bag and tossing it onto my desk. It was a picture of my twins, Leo and Maya, playing at the park, taken from a distance. "He wants to destroy your entire life."

A primal, ferocious rage ignited inside my chest. They had come for my business, which I could handle. But the moment Victor aimed his sights at my children, he signed his own death warrant.
"Julian," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm, lethal whisper. "Call the FBI. We aren't just going to block his traffic. We are going to burn his entire shadow empire to the ground."
