Chapter 6 - The Blood-Stained BoxThe absolute peace of my new life was a fragile, crystalline thing, and I should have known better than to believe Daniel would let me keep it.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, exactly one week before the one-year anniversary of the night I almost bled to death in the maternity ward while Daniel stood outside the glass, whispering on the phone with his mistress. I was in the middle of finalizing a multi-million-dollar acquisition for Mercer Holdings from the mahogany desk in my home office. Julian was across the room, his tie loosened, reviewing a stack of legal briefs, occasionally looking up just to catch my eye and smile.

The estate was quiet, save for the distant sound of our nanny, Maria, singing softly to Leo and Maya in the nursery down the hall.

Then, the intercom on my desk buzzed. It was Thomas, my head of security.

“Ms. Mercer,” Thomas said, his voice unusually tight. I had kept Daniel’s last name purely as a corporate power move, a daily reminder to the industry of who truly owned the empire now. “A package just arrived at the front gates. The courier didn't wait for a signature. He dropped it and sped off in an untraceable black sedan.”

Julian looked up, his lawyer’s instincts instantly flaring. He dropped his pen.

“Bring it to the security annex and scan it,” I ordered, my pulse quickening. “Do not bring it into the main house.”

“Already scanned, ma'am. No explosives, no chemical signatures. It’s just a standard cardboard box. But… it’s addressed to you, heavily marked with ‘Personal and Urgent’.”

Julian stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. “I’ll go down and get it. Stay here, Emily.”

Ten minutes later, Julian returned. He wasn't smiling anymore. He carried a plain brown box, the edges battered, sealed with heavy black tape. He set it on my desk with a thud that echoed in the quiet room.

“I put on gloves before opening the outer seal,” Julian said, his jaw locked in a hard line. “Emily, I don’t think you should look at this.”

But the fierce, independent woman I had become refused to hide. I stood up, walked around the desk, and pulled the flaps of the box open. The smell hit me first—a faint, metallic odor of dried copper mixed with sterile hospital antiseptic.

Inside the box lay a hospital gown. It was faded, crumpled, and heavily stained with dark, rusted patches of dried blood. My breath hitched in my throat. I didn't need to check the tag to know what it was. It was the exact gown I had been wearing the night my uterus ruptured, the night my twins were pulled from my dying body.

Resting on top of the ruined fabric was a single piece of heavy cardstock.

I reached out with a trembling hand and picked it up. The handwriting was jagged, frantic, but entirely recognizable. It was Daniel’s.

“You took my company. You took my wealth. You took my life. But you are sitting on a throne built on my bloodline. Enjoy the estate, Emily. I’m coming for what’s genetically mine. See you soon.”

The card slipped from my fingers, fluttering to the hardwood floor.

Julian’s eyes darkened with a terrifying, protective fury. He pulled his phone from his pocket. “Thomas,” Julian barked into the receiver, his voice cold as ice. “Double the perimeter guard. Nobody gets within a mile of this estate without a full background check. Contact the local precinct and have them put a patrol car at the end of the street. Now.”

He hung up and pulled me into his chest. I pressed my face into his shoulder, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Daniel wasn't just a mid-level manager in another state. The rumors had been a smokescreen. He had been lurking in the shadows, festering in his own toxic hatred, plotting his revenge while I built my kingdom. He didn't want the company back. He knew he couldn't get it. He wanted the only things in the world that mattered to me: Leo and Maya.

“He’s not going to touch them,” Julian whispered fiercely into my hair, his arms tightening around me like a fortress. “I swear to you, Emily. If he steps one foot onto this property, I will bury him so deep the devil himself won't be able to find him.”

May you like

I pulled back, looking into Julian’s eyes. The panic that had briefly gripped me began to burn away, replaced by a cold, white-hot fury. I was a mother, and a mother’s wrath is a force of nature.

“No,” I said, my voice steadying, chilling the air between us. “We aren't going to wait for him to come to us, Julian. We are going to hunt him down. If Daniel wants a war, he just kicked down the door of the wrong castle.”
