Chapter 14 - The Unstoppable AscentThe fallout from Victor Sterling’s arrest was the biggest corporate scandal of the decade. When the FBI raided his compound, they didn't just find the evidence of his attacks against Mercer Holdings; they uncovered a massive, global network of digital extortion, money laundering, and illegal data brokering. The news networks ran the story 24/7, plastering Victor’s mugshot across every screen in the country.

Instead of ruining my company, Victor’s malicious attack accidentally became the greatest marketing tool in history. The public was obsessed with the drama. The fact that Aria’s launch had survived a literal cyber-warfare attack made her a legend overnight.
Within a week of the launch, our virtual KOC division was valued at over two billion dollars. Aria secured exclusive, multi-million dollar contracts to model for the top three luxury fashion houses in Paris and Milan. We had successfully merged high fashion with cutting-edge AI, and I was hailed on the cover of Forbes as the most resilient and innovative CEO of the era.
But as the corporate world bowed at my feet, my heart was focused entirely on a different kind of foundation.
Two months after Victor’s arrest, Julian and I stood on the dusty ground of our property. The construction crews had finally finished the first phase of our home. We were standing in the center of a massive, perfectly poured, flawlessly engineered concrete foundation. The wooden framing was just beginning to go up, outlining the shape of the sprawling, sunlit rooms that would soon hold our family's future.
"It’s perfect," I said, walking slowly across the smooth concrete. I looked at the exact spot where the living room would be, picturing the twins playing on a thick rug by a grand fireplace. I traced my hand in the air, imagining the walls that would protect us. "No cracks. No weaknesses. It’s built to last forever."
"Just like us," Julian said, stepping up behind me and slipping his arms around my waist.
I leaned back against him, feeling the solid, comforting rhythm of his heartbeat. The journey to this exact moment had been a brutal, exhausting war. I had been stripped of everything, abandoned, humiliated, and hunted by men who thought my kindness was a weakness. They had tried to break me with poverty, with lies, and with technology.
But every single attack had only served to forge my armor.
"We need to finalize the guest list for the wedding," Julian murmured, kissing the curve of my neck. "Your mother keeps calling my assistant because you aren't answering her emails about the floral arrangements."
I laughed, the sound echoing freely across the open construction site. "Tell her I want white roses. But not the fragile kind. The wild ones, with the thorns still attached."
Julian turned me around in his arms, a slow, incredibly handsome smile spreading across his face. "A wedding with thorns. I like it. Suits the bride perfectly."
"I have one condition about the wedding, though," I said, looking deeply into his dark, intelligent eyes.
"Name it. The world is yours, Emily."
"I don't want to get married in a fancy hotel, or a rented ballroom," I said, looking around at the wooden framing of our half-built house. "I want to get married right here. On this foundation. Before the walls even go up. I want the first memory of this house to be the moment we officially become a family."

Julian’s eyes softened with a profound, overwhelming love. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "It would be an honor to marry you on this foundation, Emily."
I rested my forehead against his, closing my eyes and breathing in the scent of fresh pine and the crisp country air. The past was completely, permanently erased. The future was unwritten, but for the first time in my life, I held the pen.
